In a relatively calm gathering at the Blanco Library on Saturday, February 23, the membership of the Blanco Historic Cemetery Association came together for their annual meeting. Diana Blackburn presented the proposed 2013 budget as well as the checkbook and CD balances. Karen Wagner, Page Warren, and Diana Blackburn reviewed the accounting of income and expenses for the cemetery.

Blanco County Commissioners met in a Special Meeting on Tuesday, February 26th, 2013. All four County Commissioners were in attendance, and the minutes of the Regular Meeting held on February 12, 2013 were approved by the Court. Commissioners heard the annual report presented by Susan Hamm of the Texas Housing Foundation.

The deadline to file for the positions coming up for election in May on the city council and school board is set for 5pm on Friday, March 1. Up for election this cycle is Mayor Chuck Homan’s seat and council seats held by Danny Ray and Maria Guerrero. Mayor Homan and council member Ray have filed for re-election. Places 5, 6, and 7 on the Blanco ISD Board of Trustees are on the ballot this year.

The GVTC Foundation passed the one million dollar mark in giving by donating $5,000 each to eight food banks located from Boerne to Gonzales, for a total of $40,000 to fight hunger. The Foundation was just $5,000 dollars away from its milestone and wanted to do something special to push its legacy of contributions over the top.

Strong, gusting winds whipped into Central Texas on Monday, February 25, causing headaches, property damage, and power outages. Gusts of more than 50 miles per hour have been reported. By noon, streets were sprinkled with branches and far-flung trash cans. Power began flickering on and off after noon and the south end of Blanco county lost power.

The following local students have been named to the Dean's List for the 2012 fall semester at Trinity University: Rex Simmons of Blanco, Celia Fitch of Spring Branch, Molly McCarthy of Spring Branch, and Maryn Swierc of Spring Branch. The Dean's List honors Trinity students who maintained a grade point average of 3.65 or better while enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours.

It has been an exciting February for the members of the Hill Country Spurs 4-H horse judging teams. On February 14, the teams competed in San Antonio at the SALE/district 10 competition. Senior member Kendra Smith finished 4th overall out of 579 senior judgers and 1st in district and was awarded a $10,000 scholarship.

The Blanco Chamber of Commerce held their annual Banquet Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Carriage Hills Ranch. The Banquet serves as a platform to recognize the previous Board of Directors, recognize volunteers, introduce the new Board and Officers, and set the tone for the upcoming year. More than 100 riders of all ages, on horseback and in wagons will make their way through the Blanco Hill Country on Wednesday, March 6. The 112-mile trail ride will cross 36 cattle guards as they ride through more than 20 hill country ranches, including the historic LBJ Ranch on RR1 before arriving at Yett Memorial Park.

Sometimes its what you don’t see that is really impressive. Such was the case recently when the Blanco Post Office installed new LED bulbs in the recently replaced carriage lights on the front of the Post Office building. The previous glare disappeared! The bulbs that originally had been installed in the new fixtures shined straight out onto the street and caused an irritating white glare for motorists and pedestrians alike.

On December 15, 2012, Mike Bell and Mable Rollins got married in Las Vegas! It was a joyous event, and everyone was very happy! Unfortunately, tragedy struck on January 19, 2013, a month later. Mike was working on the roof of their home in Blanco and fell. He lay unconscious for hours until their dogs were able to wake him up and he was able to call for help.

This designation is given each month by the Tejas Art Club Membership to honor a member with special recognition for their accomplishment. This month's designee is Peggy Wright, a Blanco resident since 1997. She has been painting with the club for several years. Peggy's grandmother was a recognized professional artist and is listed in the Smithsonian's America's Artists and is represented in their American Artists collection.

The Blanco High School LEO Club, having volunteered at enough community service activities to donate a few funds, held an officers’ meeting to decide where to give the money. Nominated and chosen by unanimous consent, the LEO Club gave $500 to Breast Cancer Awareness, $650 to the local Good Samaritan, and also gave the Middle School LEO Club $150 to get a running start in the world of volunteer activities.

On March 18, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. Blanco First Baptist Church—across from Blanco High School—will accept registration for its first term of Adult Community English Classes for our area. The spring session will begin on Monday, March 25, and extend through May 20. With all classes on Monday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., there will be a break for the summer and the fall session will start on September 16.

February’s meeting of Blanco Woman’s Club took place out at the Lodge at the Landing in the beautiful hill country. The Literature Department hosted renowned author Ben Rehder. The ladies had a front row seat to get a sneak peek at the author’s background and writing process. Ben was a very engaging speaker, describing his research that makes his novels so enthralling and enjoyable.

Every year Christians in Blanco have lunches during Lent. The free will offering supports the Blanco Ministerial Alliance. Those offerings are given to people passing through Blanco who need help with gas, food or lodging. Blanco Good Samaritan Center serves the local community with financial help. These lunches are a great time for fellowship, worship, and fun.

This is the last of the seven letters that Jesus dictated to His apostle John on the Isle of Patmos, and instructed him to send to the seven churches in Asia. The churches were in Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. If you missed the previous parts of this series, you can quickly catch up by reading the first three chapters of Revelations. One may quip those letters were not to us, but I beg to differ.

Several years ago when both my wife and our daughter-in-law faced surgeries involving biopsies for cancer, we asked friends everywhere to pray for them. Letters, e-mails and phone calls enlisted the power of prayer in our time of concern for those we love. Thankfully, both of them were found to be cancer free. John E. Walton enjoyed 85 wonderful years of life, leaving us on February 12, 2013. He was born on July 5, 1927 in Denver, Colorado to Edward and Josephine Walton. John was blessed with a sister Barbara Brun and brother Jim and sister-in-law, Nancy Walton. He married Lucille Walton in Boulder, Colorado 58 years ago on September 4, 1954.

Laura Read Williamson, 80, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013 in San Marcos. She was born on July 28, 1932 to Edwin and Pele “Pearl” (Krawczinski) Read in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Laura married Keith K. Williamson on December 3, 1949 and he preceded her in death on March 3, 2011.

AUSTIN — Legislation proposing emergency supplemental appropriations to keep Medicaid funded for the rest of the year was approved by the Texas House on Feb. 21. House Bill 10 authored by Reps. Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie, and Helen Giddings, D-DeSoto, now moves to the state Senate for consideration. Medicaid serves the poor, the disabled, and older Texans.

Pedernales Electric is committed to the leaders of tomorrow. For more than a decade PEC has offered scholarships to local high school and home-schooled seniors in its service area, and applications for 2013 scholarships are now available. PEC will provide 14 scholarships to deserving seniors this spring, with amounts ranging from $2,500 to one $10,000 scholarship.

The Panther varsity baseball team played in the Texas Military Institute tournament on Friday, February 23. Blanco defeated 5 teams to claim the tournament championship. The Panthers first victim was San Antonio FEAST. Chad Marshall pitched a no-hitter and had 3 hits in the 10 – 0 win. Skylar Itz also had 3 hits.

The Panthers defeated the Johnson City Eagles on Tuesday, February 12 in a nail-biter in the final district game, 50 – 49. Leading the Panthers, Kyle Sauceda scored 16 points. Carlin Green added 12, with Brett Champion making 9. David Ramirez sank 6, and Colton Childress added 3. Sam Isenberg and Josh McCaslin each scored 2. This win placed the Panthers in a tie with Ingram as co-district champs.

Panther softball started the season with 2 wins, defeating the Canyon Lake Hawks, 14 – 3 on Tuesday, February 19 and downing the Llano Yellowjackets, 10 – 5 on Friday, February 22. Against the Hawks, batting 1000, with 2 hits, 2 walks and a “hit by pitch,” Leslie McClinton blasted into softball season with back-to-back homeruns.

So many times, we get a call and the first thing we are asked “How much per square foot to build a 2000 SF home?” If people only knew, this is a loaded question. As a custom builder, we have a standard rate, but it varies. As a tract builder, they too, normally have standard rates.
