While new Blanco police chief Michael Ritchey has taken on the issue of loose dogs around the city, Officer Dale Bennett is working to clean up the town. Before joining the Blanco department, Officer Bennett drove through town all the time. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that Joseph Daniel Krueger, 36, a Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitive, is now in custody after being arrested in Blanco on Monday night, February 25, by the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, which includes the Texas Department of Public Safety.

An eye-catching new sign has popped up on Main Street. Blanco County Inn has erected a shiny new sign at their hotel at 902 Main. The sign advertises the Inn, Blanco Guest Houses, and a marquee for the upcoming entertainment at the venue in front of the Inn. Zydeco Blanco is coming for Ralphstock in April, owner Ralph de Leon says.

OBCCPS invites you to please join them for the annual meeting this year on Thursday, March 14. The evening will begin at 6:30pm with a wine and cheese social, followed by a presentation from Jenny Bailey, then the annual meeting at 7:00pm, and a board of directors meeting. The board is trying to increase membership in OBCCPS to insure that their goals of restoration, preservation, and usage of the courthouse benefits the community of Blanco to the fullest possible extent.

At their regular meeting March 4, Blanco ISD trustees heard an update from Vanguard Contractors Project Manager Joel Benjegerdes on the Blanco Elementary School renovation and construction project, which is now focused on the Alamo-style original school building. Millwork in classrooms in both wings is 90 percent complete, and flooring and ceiling tile work is scheduled to be completed within the next month.

Two local livestock exhibitors recently competed and placed animals at this year’s Southwestern Livestock Exposition in Ft. Worth. Blanco Jr. High students Brenna Wallace and Hanna Garrett each participated in the market barrow show and placed in the top 10 of their respective classes, with Brenna placing 4th in the Duroc division and Hanna 10th with a Light OPB.

Blanco Middle School student Brenna Wallace recently competed in the San Angelo Market Barrow Show and placed 2nd and 7th with her Duroc barrows, both of which were bred and raised by the Wallace Family. As a result of her high placing, Brenna’s 2nd place barrow qualified for the premium sale.

When most people think of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, they think of livestock, bull riders and corn dogs. Usually Prepared Public Speaking Contests, Youth Leadership and Agricultural Science Fairs do not come to mind. However, members of the Blanco FFA Chapter have recently taken part in these events and have acquired valuable life skills as a result of their efforts. First, nine students took part in the prepared public speaking contests.

Lucky Leaf 4-H’s second annual dog show is set for Saturday, March 9, at the Young Life Building at the corner of 5th and Pecan streets. The event goes from 10am to noon with an entry fee of $5 for any and all events. Entry forms are available at Car Quest and Seymour’s Garage.

The lawn in front of the Blanco-Pedernales Conservation District office at 601 W. Main in Johnson City is being transformed by a group of Blanco County Master Gardeners from a patch of weeds into a garden full of native plants and walkways, with a gazebo for resting in the shade.

On Saturday, March 9, Blanco County 4H Shooting Education will be hosting the Texas State Rifle Association’s annual BB-Gun State Match. This is an event that has been ongoing for several years past. In the past few years, the state match has been hosted by the Gillespie County 4H Shooting Team.

Jon Brieger and Jeff Harkinson auction off items at a fundraiser to help out Mable Rollins and Mike Bell. The event was held at the Old Blanco County Courthouse on Sunday, March 3. The old courtroom was packed throughout the day with friends of the couple. Mike was injured falling off a roof and is unable to work.

It took countless volunteers to make the Youth Show a fun and meaningful experience for the young people in Blanco County. Students, parents and other volunteers showed up for two workdays prior to the show to begin barn preparations. Awards were ordered including rolling pullman bags, blankets, coolers, jacket certificates, and buckles for the grand champion exhibitors, and buyer appreciation gifts for the buyers.

Last week we started to look at the subject of Christian suffering, starting in Romans 8:17-18. We saw that Christians suffer with Jesus, more than for Him. He takes our sufferings very personally. We saw that if we suffer, it should be for righteousness sake - not as an evil doer.

The Panther Band qualified another member to state. Rebecca Dowlearn competed at Wagner High School in San Antonio last Saturday, earning a Division 1 on her memorized piano solo. She, along with fourteen other Panther Band members, will move on to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble contest in May. Congratulations to Rebecca!

Blanco Masonic Lodge #216 hosted a Take Time to Read awards ceremony on Tuesday, February 26. The event honored approximately 60 elementary students and their families. The program runs for six weeks, and involves parents reading with their children at home.

The Panther softball team rallied back against the Wimberley Texans to snag the win, 7-4, on Tuesday, February 26. Then on Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 the Panthers defeated 6 teams to win the 9th Annual Blanco Softball Tournament. Against Wimberley, Callie Culton and Meaghen Seales pitched for the Panthers.

In their first game of the Johnson City tournament on Friday, March 1 the Panthers battled Lampasas for the 9-8 win in 8 innings. Kyle Gray, Sam Isenberg, T. J. Hardin, and Skylar Itz each had 3 hits. Sam pitched relief for the win. Next the Panthers soundly defeated Comfort 17-9.

March is the busiest month of the spring season. There is so much to be done. You should have finished the rose pruning, along with dead plants cut back and removed to the compost. This is a good month to complete heavy shrub pruning – hedges, etc. If you use organic fertilizer, you can feed the lawn, shrubs, trees and gardens any time.

Officers responded to a burglary alarm at Strickland Drugs at 1:30am on February 1, 2013. Upon arrival, the responding officers found that a burglary had taken place and looked at the security camera video, according to the Blanco Police Department. The officers reportedly recognized the suspects on the video and went to their residence.
