At a special called meeting of the Blanco Volunteer Fire Department on July 18, a number of measures were voted on to ensure that the department is in compliance with Emergency Services District #2 rules and will be able to qualify for grants. Three new board members were elected in addition to the current board, which consists of Al Turner, Vance Jenkins, Harvie Lindeman, and Lynn Hicks.

The Blanco County Commissioners Court met during a Special Meeting on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in the Commissioners Courtroom of the Blanco County Courthouse in Johnson City, Texas. All four County Commissioners and Blanco County Judge Bill Guthrie were present at the meeting. Blanco County Clerk Karen Newman read the minutes of the Regular Meeting from July 9th, 2013.

Workers were spotted installing the Blanco Library’s new sign on Tuesday, July 23. Librarian Crystal Spybuck detailed the news in her article two weeks ago, “Our current Blanco Library books sign will be replaced with an electronic sign. The City of Blanco has chosen the library’s site to construct the electronic sign donated through funds by PEC to help share community news.

Arline Cathey celebrated her 89th birthday July 23rd at the Gem of the Hills with her bridge club. Arline and her husband, Dr. Ken Cathey (deceased), were original supporters of the Gem of the Hills Senior Citizen Community Center.

A Burnet County man was sentenced to 23 consecutive life sentences following a jury trial in the courtroom of 424th District Judge Dan Mills last Thursday, July 18. The jury found Robert Michael Arteaga guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault and possession of child pornography. Heritage School eighth grader, Harleigh Klepac, will be going to the National Junior Classical League Convention in Las Vegas Nevada as a Latin oratory speaker during July 22 through 27th. The convention will be held at the University of Las Vegas. She won first place at the Texas State Junior Classical League Contest in Flower Mound, Texas this April in the Latin Oratory event.

When flying in weather with very poor visibility a pilot can experience a sensation know as “vertigo.” They cannot tell by looking out the cockpit windows whether the plane is flying at a level altitude, turning left or right, or whether it is going up or down! They become completely disoriented to where the plane is in relation to the ground, but they may not even be aware they are experiencing the problem.

The Blanco Middle School cheerleaders started their 2013 cheer season with a 3-day camp at the middle school gym on Monday, July 15. Taught by Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) instructor, Alex Pena, the cheerleaders learned new cheers, chants, and dances. The girls also practiced their jumps and stunts. On Wednesday, the squad members had the option to try out for All-American.
