On Friday, August 9 the Blanco County American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary hosted and Open House and Ribbon Cutting to showcase the new renovations of their meeting hall. Blanco ISD Curriculum Director Rick Labuhn presented 2013 state Accountability Ratings to trustees at their August 12 meeting. The district and all three campuses met state standards on all four indices—Student Achievement, Student Progress, Closing Performance Gaps, and Post-Secondary Readiness. Blanco County Commissioners held a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2013. All four County Commissioners and Blanco County Judge Bill Guthrie met in the Commissioners Courtroom of the Blanco County Courthouse. The meeting convened at 9:00 a.m., and Blanco County Clerk Karen Newman read the minutes from the Special Meeting of July 23, 2013.

Monday, August 19, 6:00 PM at the Blanco High School Gym Pizza will be available, free from the Concessions Stand. The new Spirit Shirts and the new and improved Panther Tunnel will be unveiled at the event. Membership forms for the Blanco All-Sports Booster Club will also be available.

Lawrence Coffee’s Induction into the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum was awesome! Being married to a legend is quite an experience! Everywhere we go, someone recognizes Lawrence. He’s always smiling at people and waving to them. Mr. & Mrs. Jim Austin treated all the inductees like royalty! Thursday night at the nightclub we were entertained by comedians and singers, and met some of the other inductees.

The Blanco Library is pleased to announce that The Libri Foundation has donated 80 children’s books to our community. The Libri Foundation’s mission is to help rural libraries like ours to provide the best quality children’s collection to encourage and nurture a love for reading and learning. The Friends of the Blanco Library raised donations at their annual Dinner and a Movie in the spring that the Foundation matched 2-1.

The museum hosted a group of homeschooled children and their parents from the Kendalia, Boerne and Spring Branch areas on August 1st. This group numbered 23 people. We were amazed at the questions of the children and how well-mannered they all were. After a tour of the museum, Lawrence Coffee took time to teach anyone who wanted to learn to rope a calf.

Avi Lipkin, internationally known author and speaker, will be speaking Wednesday, August 21, at the First Baptist Church, 1200 West 4th, St., Blanco at 7:00 PM. Lipkin, who currently lives in Israel, is traveling through the US to share his experiences and his knowledge of the problems in the Middle East.

The Spa at the Inn at Baron’s Creek (308 S.Washington St., FBG, TX) is sponsoring a Whole and Natural Wellness Fest for the benefit of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Texas Hill Country. This free event is thought to be the first of its kind for Fredericksburg and they are planning on making it an annual event.

Hometown Memories Publishing is saving a big slice of local history in a book titled A Living History of The Texas Hill Country, Morning Chores and Soda Fountains. The hardcover coffee table book will contain tales of bygone years from Texans who actually lived them. The Texas Hill Country book will be hard bound and coffee table sized (8 ½ by 11 inches) with over 250 pages and hundreds of old photographs.

Season ticket sales for the 2013 varsity football season will go on sale on Monday, August 26th, for renewals only until Friday, August 30, 2013. Initial ticket sales will begin on Tuesday, September 3rd until Friday, September 6th. The cost will be $25 for adults and $15 for students (five home games).

Football has begun for the Blanco Youth Football League, and players from the Varsity and JV teams came out on Saturday, August 10 for Kick Start Camp, taught by Jim Raby, his son TJ, Steven Lieck, and assisted by BYFL Coach Eric Berne. This Saturday, August 17, the BYFL cheerleaders will be holding a bake sale 8am - noon at Lowe's, Bliss Bling and Sassy Things, and CIGI's.

Like most youth groups, the “Magnet STAR” kids needed to raise some funds in order to carry out their high school theatre activities. They came to me, their principal, for some ideas and, most of all, for permission.
