On Tuesday, October 1, 2013, the Blanco County Appraisal District mailed out 17,110 tax bills to all taxpayers within their jurisdiction. If you have not received a bill by October 11, 2013, please call 830-868-4013 and a duplicate bill will be reprinted for you. You can also visit our home page at www.blancocad.com and click on Appraisal Information to view the latest tax roll information for Blanco County. The Appraisal District is located at 615 N.

The Blanco Chamber of Commerce would like to invite all members of the Chamber to attend the Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the Chamber Office. Business items on the agenda for the meeting are the proposed changes to the Chamber of Commerce By-Laws, as well as the voting in of the 2014-2015 Directors.

This year’s annual Uptown Blanco Quilt Show opens at noon on Friday, October 11 and runs through Sunday, October 13. Quilter’s from the state of Texas will have their quilts on display in the judged and non-judged categories. The show features two internationally renowned quilters, Louisa Smith of Loveland, Colorado and Ellen Anne Eddy of Porter, Indiana.

The Blanco Varsity Volleyball team beat the Lampasas Lady Badgers 3-0 in their final pre-District match. The Panther’s first home District match is Friday, October 4. Freshmen and Junior Varsity play at 4pm and Varsity plays at 5pm against the Comfort Deer.

Organizers of the Wild Game Dinner are looking forward to serving a delicious variety of game to a large crowd this Saturday, Oct. 5th, at the Blanco County Show Barn in Johnson City. This year’s fare includes fried Axis and Fallow, wild game chili, whole roasted hog, wild boar BBQ, gumbo, jambalaya, fresh homemade sausage, boiled and fried shrimp, fried pork, brisket, fried sweet taters, along with bacon-wrapped dove and quail.

American Legion Memorial Highway Post 352 is eligible to sponsor one high school student from each of Blanco, LBJ, and Canyon Lake high schools plus one home schooled student to participate in the Legion District 10 contest at Blinn College in Brenham, TX in early January. They will compete with students sponsored by 28 other Posts from 10 Texas counties for a $500 scholarship.

This year marks the Blanco Library’s 75th anniversary! The Blanco Library invites everyone to the Oral History Project Reception Wednesday October 23rd, 6pm, at the Old Blanco County Courthouse. Blanco citizens who participated in our project to preserve Blanco history will be honored during this momentous program. There will be video clips and refreshments.

We're doing it again! The 2nd Annual Blanco Western Showcase and Chuck Wagon Cook-off returns November 1-3. The Buggy Barn Museum will be hosting the WORLD Championship Knife and Tomahawk Throwing competition. There will be lots of activities for every member of your family. For the tenth year in a row, the Sparks Family chuckwagon team will be hosting elementary school students with an education day.

On Friday September 20, 11 scouts and 4 leaders from Blanco Troop 497 ventured to STEM Camp at the Lost Pines Boy Scout Camp grounds in Bastrop, Texas. This was no ordinary camp. We had the best weather and the best learning experience from the classes that we took. Electronics, Composite materials, Engineering, Inventions, Surveying, and Chemistry are the merit badges we took at Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Camp. Due to an increase in Petty Theft at local convenient stores in Johnson City, JCPD will no longer be writing citations for Petty Theft. If you are 17 or older and steal anything, including items amounting to less than $50 (Class C Misdemeanor), you will be arrested and you will go to jail.

During the night of August 28, 1826, there came one of the most violent and destructive rainstorms ever known in the White Mountains. Two days after the storm, anxious friends and relatives came to the valley to learn the fate of the Willey family. They found the house unharmed, but the surrounding fields were covered with debris due to a terrible landslide.

Nicholas Burison, a hardworking man of integrity, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25th at his home with his family at his bedside. Nick died of natural causes at the age of 83. He was born in Uniontown, PA, the youngest of 15. He graduated high school in Uniontown and served our country in the army both active duty and reserve.

Freeman Jennings, 89, born June 16, 1924, passed away on September 30, 2013 at his home surrounded by family. Visitation will be 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Crofts – Crow Funeral Home in Blanco, Texas. Funeral services will be held 10am Friday, October 4, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Blanco, with burial to follow with military honors in the Blanco Cemetery.

AUSTIN —Wendy Davis in mid-September said she would publicly announce on Oct. 3 her decision to run, or not to run, for governor in 2014. Sen. Davis, a Fort Worth Democrat now in her second term in the state Senate, gained acclaim in June when she filibustered for 11 hours to prevent a vote on legislation that was crafted to rechannel state-supported women’s health care programs and greatly reduce access to abortion services.

Just recently, seven freshmen Blanco FFA members participated in the Area VII FFA Greenhand Leadership Camp at James Madison High School in San Antonio. More than 250 first year FFA members from across the area took part in leadership building activities and workshops to help them develop a better understanding of the FFA and what it has to offer.

The Blanco FFA began the 2013-14 school year on a high note with strong showings this past week in contests at San Antonio and Seguin. Overall, more than 300 contestants participated in 8 different events with Blanco winning 6 of the 8 and placing 2nd in two others. In the Homesite competition, Blanco would finish 2nd at Bexar County and 1st at Comal-Guadalupe.

The 8th grade Blanco Panthers shut out the Comfort Bobcats, 20-0, on Thursday, September 26. Isaiah Delgado kicked off for Blanco. The Panther defense held the Bobcats, forcing Comfort to punt. With the Panther offense starting on their own 29, WIll Granberg picked up 10 yards and Toby Triesch rushed for 22 yards.

The 7th grade Blanco football team soundly defeated the Comfort Bobcats 30-12 on Thursday, September 26. After Chris Osteguin booted the kick-off for Blanco, Comfort set up their offense on their own 40 yard line. After picking up two 1st downs, the Bobcats were forced to turn over the ball on a bad snap to their punter. In the opening series, tackles were made by Zach Collins, Justin Wardlow, Cade Felps, Cooper Riley, Matthew Ledesma, and Chance Horton.

I wasn’t quite eight years old when my maternal grandfather passed away. John H. Price was 82. He was found one cold fall morning slumped against a cedar fence post with a pitchfork in his hand. As usual, he had gone out to tend to his dairy cows and failed to come in for breakfast. After the funeral services, his descendants, including my mother, gathered at the old homestead to discuss the disposition of his property and meager possessions.

According to Webster’s Dictionary: an interest in land owned by another that entitles its holder to a specific limited use or enjoyment. What does this mean to you?
