At their regular meeting February 17, members of the Blanco County ESD #2 approved a resolution to adopt the 2014-2018 Strategic Plan developed by board member Darwin Labarthe with input from citizens, the Blanco Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the Volunteer Fire Department. President Ann Hall read a letter from City Attorney Eddy Rogers, in which he commended the efforts of the ESD board in putting together the plan.

The Blanco Panther baseball field will have a new scoreboard this year thanks to The Blanco National Bank. “The old scoreboard had been hanging around for about twenty years or so, say some of my old players,” said head baseball coach Bryan Wyatt. “The Blanco National Bank hit a home run when they decided to help us with the scoreboard.

At the February 11 meeting of the governing body of Blanco, Blanco Historic Commission member and Keep Blanco Beautiful representative Retta Martin urged city council to proceed with implementing the Comprehensive Master Plan, which was adopted in 2007 but never updated. She said that new properties annexed by the city need to conform to the regulations of the plan, and that LCRA and PEC are both ready to sit down and help Blanco update the plan.

Lone Star Capital Bank completed its operational merger with Cattleman’s National Bank, on February 7, 2014. The new sign for the Blanco location, part of Lone Star's Hill Country division, was installed by Aetna Sign Group during the week of February 10.

The Blanco Historic Preservation Commission (BHPC) held a 2014 Planning Workshop at the Blanco Library on Saturday, February 15. Attending were commissioners Jim Harris, Jo Nell Haas, J D Sherlock, Charles Willgren, Retta Martin and Advisor/Historian Becky Greathouse. Wayne Gosnell with the Blanco Historic Preservation Action Plan (BHPAP) Night Friendly Skies - Preserving Blanco’s Night Skies was also present.

The Daddy Daughter Dance on Saturday, February 15 was a special evening where dads and daughters danced and laughed the night away. The Second Mile Rec. Center was the perfect place for the occasion. The Friends of Blanco State Park supply split firewood bundles to park visitors, for a small donation. The funds in turn are used to contribute to the many Friends’ projects that help to support the park and their mission. On a recent Saturday, many of the Friends gathered to transport a large supply of firewood to the park, in order to keep the supply available to all in these cold winter weeks.

Proverbs 18:1 “1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.” So, this verse seems to say, when someone has separated themselves from God and His wisdom, they might want something and make a wrong decision trying to get it. You might not get that out of it, but I do. You may take time for God, but I know everyone doesn’t always do it.

I encourage you to read Psalm 145. Verse 4 says, “One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.” It is very important - even commanded - that we pass on the mighty acts of God to the next generation. We, as parents and grandparents, have the responsibility of communicating the truth of God’s Word to our offspring.

Ann Margaret (Abbott) Wynkoop, 93 of Spring Branch, Tx, passed away on Wednesday February 12th, in a Blanco nursing home. Memorial services will be planned at a later time. Ann was born on June 25, 1920, in New Hartford, Missouri, to Vinton Clark and Johannah Louise (Franson) Abbott. She worked as a secretary for many years in several different production companies.

Surrounded by her family, Lucia "Lucy" R. Uselton died in Houston at her son’s home on Sunday, February 16, 2014. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband Whitey Uselton and son Fred Vasquez.She is survived by sons Abraham Vasquez and his wife Susie, Miguel Vasquez, and David Vasquez, and her beloved nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. After a 33-year career with Serafy Laboratories in Brownsville, Texas, she married Whitey Uselton in 2000 and retired to the Texas Hill Country.

Robert Lynn (Bobby) Parkinson, 72, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at his home in Boquete, Panama. Bobby was born on December 4, 1941, at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas, to Ben and Marguerite Parkinson. After graduating from Lamar High School in 1960 and attending The University of Texas, Bobby returned to Houston where he worked with his father at Parkinson Equipment Company.

Blanco ISD’s District Site-Based Decision Committee met on Monday to assess the district in regards to Community and Student Engagement. “We had a good meeting,” said Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford. The topic came about as part of the requirements of House Bill 5, which was passed by the 83rd Legislature and signed by the governor in June 2013.

The Blanco Panthers won the District 27-AA Championship posting an undefeated 8-0 record with their final District win, 59-33, over Johnson City on Wednesday, February 12. Kyle Sauceda led the team scoring 16 points. Josh McCaslin sank 10 points, with Carlin Green adding 8, Jacob McCaslin and Brett Champion each scored 6 points.

The Blanco Lady Panthers lost in the Bi-District round of playoffs to the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs on Tuesday, February 11 at the Seguin High School gym. The Panthers led at halftime, 30-26, but the Mustangs led by four points at the final buzzer, 52-56. Jamie McClinton fought through the defense to lead the team scoring 15 points.

While living in El Paso we made frequent trips to Alamogordo, New Mexico, via US Highway 54.
