The Blanco County Commissioners conducted a Special Meeting in the Commissioners Courtroom of the Blanco County Courthouse in Johnson City, Texas on February 25th, 2014. The meeting opened at 9:00 a.m. and all four County Commissioners and Blanco County Judge Bill Guthrie attended. On Tuesday, March 4, the American Legion and Blanco ISD issued a joint press release announcing the agreement in the case of The American Legion Post 352 and the Blanco Independent School District, regarding the use of the American Legion building on the Elementary campus. On January 31, the two groups met to mediate the lawsuit with Kingsland attorney and mediator Charles Lacallade.

The regular meeting of the Blanco ISD School Board of Trustees was held March 3, a week early as to not coincide with Spring Break next week. On Sunday February 16th Troop 497(6 scouts and 4 leaders) and Pack 497(6 cub scouts and 1 leader) joined together to honor our Charter Organization the Blanco United Methodist Church. The Scouts and leaders dressed in Class A uniforms presented the colors at the 11:00 am services. Reverend Green introduced the Scout Master Joe Lockwood who thanked the Church and members for supporting the Scouts with a nice facility to have our meetings and special events.

Downtown Revitalization and Historic Preservation were two of the topics covered in the 2005 Blanco Comprehensive Master Plan (CMP). These two topics went hand in hand for implementation of the CMP goals since downtown Blanco is the National Registry Historic District. The district covers the courthouse and parts of the eight blocks surrounding it.

There have been lots of activity in your Fire Department the past few weeks. This past Saturday, your department, along with Blanco EMS and assistance from the Spring Branch and Johnson City departments, responded to a dispatch call reporting a trailer carrying 11 round bales of hay was on fire at the entrance to the Landon’s Crossing subdivision.

Calling Central Texas home isn’t new for Victoria Celestine, but it has been awhile. “It’s really nice to be back in Blanco after 8 years across the sea. It’s definitely always been a home even when I was gone. It was the first home that I ever lived in from 0 to 3 years old, and it’s great to be here again.” she told Blanco County News.

Read 2Cor 12:1-4. Here we learn, that the Apostle Paul (referring to himself in the third person) was caught up to the Paradise - the third Heaven. The third heaven is where God dwells. The first is our sky (atmosphere Gen 1:6-8). The second the celestial heaven (Gen 1:14-18). We learned last week that there are two eternal destinies for mankind.

Jerry Lee Crossley, 64 of Haskell, Texas and formerly of Blanco, Texas, passed away on Tuesday February 25, 2014. Graveside services were held in the Blanco Cemetery on March 4, 2014 at 2:00 PM under the direction of Crofts-Crow Funeral Home in Blanco, Texas. Jerry was born on March 29, 1949 in Blanco, Texas to Silas and Wilma (Wagner) Crossley.

She is preceded in death by her husband Gunnar Willgren and is survived by her children: Steve Willgren (Judy), Wanda Madden (Salvador), David Willgren (Leigh Ann); grandchildren: Charles, Ashley, Caroline, Lacey, Dustin, Travis, Erin; great-grandchildren: Jonah and Khalen.

On Saturday morning, March 1st, many residents of Landon's Crossing, south of Blanco, were treated to an impromptu "get to know each other better" gathering near the front of the subdivision when another neighbor's trailer load of round hay bales accidently caught fire. When the fire trucks and other emergency equipment arrived, the only road in and out was blocked for a couple of hours.

The Blanco FFA Chapter recently competed in the San Antonio Livestock Exposition livestock judging competition in both the junior and senior divisions. In the senior contest, Blanco placed 22nd out of 248 teams. Individually, Logan Dodd finished 22nd out of 821 contestants. The Panther Varsity Baseball Team started their 2014 season with a 7-1 win over St. Anthonys on Tuesday, February 18. Jake Breeding picked up win number 1 on the mound by going 4 innings. Chase Glowka and McKay Adamson each had 2 hits and 2rbi. On Monday, February 24 Blanco defeated Harper 9-1.

The Blanco Varsity softball team has played 12 games in the past 2 weeks, including 6 in the Kerrville Tivy Tournament and 4 in the Blanco Tournament. Eleven of those opponents have been 3A, 4A, and 5A schools. The Panthers now hold a 7-5 season record. Blanco started the season with a 14-10 win over Canyon Lake on Tuesday, February 18.

The Panthers boys basketball team started the playoffs with a strong Bi-District win, 67-47, over the Karnes City Badgers at Littleton Gym in San Antonio on Tuesday, February 18. Facing Hitchcock in the Area round on Friday, February 21 at Columbus, the Panthers led 34-30 at the half, but lost the battle in the 4th quarter with a final score 53-62. Walk, walk, walk…it’s free and effective. Walking done well can reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, improve insulin/glucose metabolism and aid in the treatment of some musculoskeletal diseases. But- how does one ‘walk well?’ Good question. Let’s talk about that: First, let me say that traditional walking programs might not be enough for the very fit individual and may be a little too much for the person with physical limitations.

March is a very busy month for all gardeners. There is so much to do; pruning, preparing the soil, fertilizing the shrubs, trees, lawn and mulch to preserve water. Tomatoes seem to be the number one vegetable for home gardeners. There are many varieties, including hybrids and heirlooms. We each have our favorites but it is interesting to try a new variety each season.

I must confess, since I took over as Editor of the Blanco County News, I’ve looked forward to the prospect of writing a column. It’s been nearly a year since I began here, and with the start of this new Lifestyle page, I thought, “Now is the time!” Even though the opportunity had been presented, I found myself without a clear vision of what to write about.
