At the March 11 meeting of the governing body of Blanco, a public hearing was held to discuss amending Blanco’s Historic Preservation Ordinance. Retta Martin explained the necessity for extending the review process from 15 to 31 days for approving changes to historic buildings and for determining the necessity of a demolition by hardship of a building.

By Priscilla Seals One of the primary concerns of citizens at last May’s town hall meeting about emergency services in Blanco was the cost of homeowner insurance in localities served by the Blanco Volunteer Fire Department. For some it was the first time they had even heard the term “ISO rating,” and the fact that the city of Blanco has a rating of 8 was meaningless.

On March 15, two fourth grade students from Blanco Elementary School were honored during the monthly meeting of the Blanco County Pioneers Chapter of Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT). The students had responded to the invitation extended to all fourth and seventh grade students in Blanco County to write an essay about William Berrett Travis or about his letter sent from the Alamo entitled “Victory or Death”.

The old portables are notably absent from in front of Blanco Elementary School, having been removed over Spring Break. Superintendent Dr. Buck Ford told Blanco County News that there are no immediate plans for renovating the area.

Your Fire Department conducted very valuable training Saturday, March 8 at the station. Led by professional firefighter, J.D. Harlow, who is also BVFD’s designated Trainer, a class of five volunteers was provided both classroom and realistic training on several critical elements of firefighting as defined in the State Firemen’s & Fire Marshals’ Association of TX (SFFMA) requirements for Firefighter 1 certification.

Dallas Ray Lawrence 68 a resident of Spring Branch, Texas, passed away March 7, 2014 in Spring Branch, Texas. He was born March 16, 1945 in Leach, Oklahoma, the son of Robert Earl and Ruth Plumlee Lawrence. Dallas served in the United States Marine Corps. AUSTIN — Looking back at the March 4 primaries, Texas boasted 13,601,324 voters registered in time to cast a ballot. An estimated 9 percent of the overall number of registered voters (about 1.3 million) voted in the Republican primary and 4 percent (500,000) voted in the Democratic primary. Runoffs between the top two vote-getting candidates in a number of contests are scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, the day after the federal holiday, Memorial Day.

The Blanco softball team started district play on Tuesday, March 11 against the Lago Vista Vikings with a 15-0 shut-out. Junior Lexee Jenkins smashed a single and a double with 3 rbi. Freshman Katlinn Calzoncit hit 2 singles with 4 rbi. Senior Meaghen Seales leveled 2 singles with 2 rbi.

Blanco baseball hosted their tournament on March 6-8 with the Panthers making it to the finals against the San Antonio Home School Wolverines. However, the final was rained out as a cold front roared through the Hill Country. In route to the finals, the Panthers first victim were the Ingram Warriors.

Citizens of Blanco, the time is nigh to get rid of your household clutter. For those of you who live in the City, the City Yard (next to the recycling center) will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, April 7-11. All you need to do is pick up a voucher at City Hall and haul your stuff over there!

I have to admit that my running career has been less than stellar. In my junior year of high school I won the 440-yard dash and the high jump. Having convinced myself that I had both events in the bag, my senior year I came in second in each of them.
