On behalf of the Blanco County Farm Bureau, director Kenneth Moore presents Anna Anderson at the Blanco Good Samaritan Food Center with a donation of $250 for the Food Connection Week. Texas Food Connection Week was established to connect farmers and ranchers with consumers and initiate discussions about agriculture and food-related issues, including affordability, nutrition, food safety, animal welfare, profitability and productivity.

The Blanco County Commissioners conducted a Special meeting on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. The meeting was held in the Commissioners Courtroom of the Blanco County Courthouse in Johnson City, Texas. All four County Commissioners and County Judge Bill Guthrie attended the meeting. Blanco County Commissioner John Wood led the Court in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

During the regular meeting of the ESD board on March 17, BVFD accountant Elaine Hanks reported net department income for the month of February as a little over $9K. For the year to date, the department had income of $38,400 less than expenses and total income for the fiscal year of just under $124K with expenditures of $167,254.

Individuals are being sought who are willing to volunteer during times of need. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. The annual Membership meeting of the Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservations Society was held Thursday, March 20. Board Chairman George Clary gave a list of highlights for 2013. The Courthouse was rented for filming of NBC show Revolution on March 19. Clary reported a revenue of $3300 from the rental and that the crew was professional and clean.

Leona Calhoun celebrated her 100th Birthday on Sunday, March 23. Family and friends joined her for a party at Live Oak Medical Center in Blanco. After cake, they released 100 balloons to commemorate the occasion.

Some of the Yucca Garden Club members recently met at the Blanco Library to assemble Easter Bags of Candy for the Live Oak Medical Center residents. The Club has been doing this for many, many years. They fill and decorate bags in both Spring and Fall in appreciation of these long-time residents who have enriched our lives.

Blanco Performing Arts attendees were treated to a riveting performance by the Texas Guitar Quartet on Saturday, March 22. The Quartet began with selections from Suite Espanola, Op. 47, a light, springing piece, to set the mood for the night. They then played pieces from Mozart and Beethoven, expertly arranged for guitar by members of the quartet. After intermission, the audience heard Tracks, from Sinfonia by Peter Lieuwen, a piece commissioned and dedicated to Issac Bustos of the quartet.

This March’s meeting included an enchanting tour of one of the Klepac Greenhouses. Klepac Greenhouses was started in 1995 by Jimmy Klepac’s grandparents and you can still tour his grandmother’s original greenhouse today! The business is still family owned and operated, but it has grown tremendously and now its nurseries cover about 100 acres or more.

At the March 11, 2014 Blanco City Council meeting the following three sections of the Blanco Historic Preservation Ordinance updates were approved. The Ordinance is located on blancoguide.com with a link to Unified Development Code and go to 4.4.The Ordinance begins at the bottom of page 4-6. Updated sections are Section 4, located on page 4-10, Section 10 item 3, located on page 4-15, and Section 12 item 6, located on page 4-16.

After a national search, Pedernales Electric Cooperative has chosen Tracy Golden to be the organization’s next Chief Financial Officer. Golden began at PEC on March 3. Golden comes to PEC after serving as Vice President of Accounting, Finance, and Member Services at Southwest Arkansas Electric Cooperative. Before that post, he was a partner at Axley & Rode, CPAs, a firm that provides various financial services to clients in a multitude of industries.

Read 1Timothy 4:12-16 carefully. Vs. 12 says, “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Example means: a die (to cast); stamp; print, shape, form, a model for imitation. As Believers, we should live our lives as models for imitation.

I’m sure a couple readers may be thinking, “Gee, she’s been publishing God’s Word for how long? And she doesn’t know what salvation is?” Right? Well, I know what I’ve read and heard preached to me, and what most people believe, but, I believe there’s more depth to it, from what I’ve read in God’s Word, and it’s a very serious topic.

Dear Editor, I do not believe the play Medea by Euripides was suitable for a school presentation. Just because it is a Greek classic, it seems that some think everything is justified, including violence, immorality, and the murder of children by their mother, cloaked by the veil of "classic", whereas if the same play were presented in a contemporary version with modern language and clothing, as West-side Story brought Romeo and Juliet to a modern audience, we would be shocked and it would not ...

Dear Editor, I like the new Lifestyle page and want to thank you for including recipes from our community cookbook, “Blanco State Park: A Taste of History and Tradition.” Sharon Romero, Jo Nell Haas and I had SO MUCH FUN putting the cookbook together to benefit Blanco State Park. The customer-owned lending cooperative continued its track record of strong earnings in 2013, enabling it to maintain its long tradition of returning profits to stockholders through its patronage program. Since 2006, Capital Farm Credit has returned over $385 million to its stockholders — equating to an effective annual rate reduction of 1.10 percent on an average loan.

The Panther softball team won a 3 inning, 15-0, run-rule game over the Ingram Lady Warriors on Tuesday, March 18 and then fell 8-9 in 8 innings to the Johnson City Lady Eagles on Friday, March 21. Against Ingram, Lexee Jenkins had the hot bat blasting 2 singles and a double with 2 rbi.

The Blanco Middle school girls track team has broken several of the BMS records in their last two meets. In the Comfort Middle School Relays on Friday, March 7, the 7th grade girls won the meet with 169 points. On Friday, March 21 the girls won the Harper Relays with 181 points.

The Panthers baseball team began district play on Tuesday, March 18 with a decisive, 16-3, win over the Ingram Warriors. Jake Breeding pitched for Blanco picking up his 3rd win of the season going 4 innings and scattering 5 hits. The Panthers hammered 14 hits in 5 innings. Kyle Gray, Kyle Sauceda, Chase Glowka, Josh McCaslin, and Mckay Adamson all had 2 hits.

Our ability to perform daily tasks peaks at age 30 and begins to decline thereafter (U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion 2008). Considering the national median age of Americans is 36.8 years old (United States Census Bureau 2010), significantly more than half of people reading this column (including this writer) are on the down side of peak performance.

It’s springtime in Blanco State Park! You can tell because the Winter Texans staying in the park are preparing to make their journeys back North. One couple we spoke with, Lennie and Dick, plan to stop at Fort Davis and other parks on their way back to Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Back in the 1950’s my father bought what was then a top-of-the-line 8mm movie camera. He turned all kinds of family activities into motion pictures. Those old silent movies include, but are not limited to, car washing, snow shoveling, Christmas present openings, weddings, elementary school parades, trips to the mountains, deer hunting… and Mom’s flowers. Now, everything else turned out just fine but close-up movies of Mom’s roses were never properly centered.
