In Public Comments at the August 12 meeting of the governing body of Blanco, Blanco Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau Director Libbey Aly expressed concerns about the quality of Blanco’s water. As in past summers, the water has exceeded Maximum Contaminant Levels for total trihalomethanes, a byproduct of chlorinating water containing organic compounds.

Blanco’s own Bret Leigh Nance was crowned the 2014-2015 Blanco County Fair and Rodeo Queen on Saturday, August 16. Nance, who will be a Junior this year, said, “I am very honored to serve as the 2014-2015 Blanco County Fair and Rodeo Queen. I am so proud to represent Blanco County and will use this opportunity to be a role model for youth in our community.

The Panthers come into the fall with a new classification (Blanco is 3A now), a new district, and a new way to listen to Blanco Panther football games. KDRP, a radio station out of Bee Cave, Texas, approached Dr. Ford, the school board, and Athletic Director Danny Rogers this summer about the possibility of broadcasting the games on a few of their satellite stations.

On August 16th, Steve and Phil Edmondson celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary at Uptown Blanco. Over a hundred attended and enjoyed cake and snacks and refreshments. High school classes of 1959 and 1960 were in attendance as well as family, friends and neighbors. Steve and Phil wish to thank everyone for their attendance, cards and wishes.

Buggy Barn Museum is proud to announce the upcoming 3rd Annual Blanco Western Showcase on November 7, 8, 9, 2014, on the grounds of the Buggy Barn Museum Complex. The past two years have been extraordinary, and we have appreciated the support we have received, especially from our sponsors. Here are some other tips to add to last weeks article on how to read a vitamin label. First, try to stay away from the grocery store! Most food at the stores are filled with preservatives, additives, hormones, etc. If you have space and can do it, try to grow whatever you can at home even if its just a few herbs.

I’d just like to share what is written in God’s Word, regarding ‘giving’ (or giving alms). Do you give alms? An alm is a charitable donation, according to my dictionary in my computer. I’m just sharing this because I came across it today, and thought it might be good for us to see, because everyone in Blanco gives to charities.

Verse 4 in particular says, “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father.” Over the past couple of weeks we have looked at different fundamental roles of Jesus. The prophet Isaiah in about 700 BC said “It is He who sits above the vault (circle) of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22). The earth is of course not a perfect circle but the Hebrew word translated circle means circle, round, or sphere. It seems that in some ancient cultures, Babylonian, Egyptian, and China, there was a belief in a flat earth.

Francis Helmuth Ulrich (Bozo) of Johnson City, Texas was born November 14, 1925 in Johnson City, Texas and passed away August 19, 2014 at the age of 88. Bozo was preceded in death by his wife Thelma Rhoden Ulrich, his parents Helmuth von Molke Ulrich and Iona Ulrich, his sister Winona Dell and husband Warren Herwig, his brother Alfred Gus (Pete) Ulrich, brother in laws; A Z Buchanan, Curtis Rhoden, Eugene Rhoden, and Albert Tuck Rhoden.

Norma Ruth “Jackie” Pearce passed away on August 11, 2014 at the age of 90. She was born in Blanco County on August 9, 1924 one of seven children born to Clyde L. and Tempie Maddox Gipson. According to her brothers, she was nicknamed “Jackie” because of a stubborn streak. For the first few years, Jackie rode 4 miles on horseback to attend school in Johnson City.

Robert Benjamin Felps, Jr. (R.B.) was born September 5, 1936 in a farmhouse on Yeager Creek Road, Blanco County, Texas, to Robert Benjamin Felps, Sr. (Bob) and Anna Lou Pellar Felps and passed away on August 13, 2014. At a very young age he was faced with taking over his father’s business, which later became known as Felps Manufacturing Corporation, a business that he eventually turned into an empire. R.B.

AUSTIN — A Travis County grand jury on Aug. 15 indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two felony counts: abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant. Count I alleges Perry, on or about June 14, 2013, intended to harm Rosemary Lehmberg, Travis County district attorney and chief of the state’s Public Integrity Unit, by intentionally or knowingly misusing public property in withholding funding approved by the Texas Legislature for the operation of the Public Integrity Unit.

Several members of the Blanco FFA Chapter recently attended the annual State FFA Convention in Ft. Worth where they were recognized on stage for their accomplishments. In all, more than 10,000 FFA members from across the state attended this year’s convention. Following scrimmages in Blanco and Boerne on August 8 and 9, the Panther Volleyball Team drove the short distance to Bulverde to face Bracken Christian on Tuesday, August 12 for their first game of the season. The Varsity swept Bracken winning in three set, 25-14, 25-17, and 25-12. Senior Reagan Rogers led the team with 18 kills and 4 blocks.
