Buy The Truth and Sell It Not
Blanco Church of Christ

A wealthy man married a beautiful young lady. He asked her, "If I lost all my money, would you still love me?" She said, "Oh honey, don't be silly. Of course I would still love you. And I'd miss you terribly."

The wise man Solomon said, "Buy truth, and do not sell it..." (Proverbs 23:23). Many like Pilate of old ask the question, "What is truth" (John 18:38)? Some today have fallen into the false notion that truth cannot be determined - that absolute truth is impossible to ascertain. When Jesus prayed for His disciples He said, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (John 17:17). How thankful we should be that our Father in heaven has chosen to reveal His will to us. It is only through the truth of God's word that one can be saved (James 1:21), become a child of God (James 1:18), purify the soul (I Peter 1:22), and certainly be set free from the sin of this world (John 8:31-32). The sacrifice of time, study, prayer, and application, are investments that are worth coming to the knowledge of the truth.

Truth can be obtained and then abandon, or sold. Somewhat like Esau selling his birthright for a single meal (Hebrews 12:16). Some sell the truth for pleasures of this world, some for friendships, some for money, some for popularity, some for status, but whatever the price, it is a bad deal indeed. With our Lord we find His forgiveness and fellowship but not without His truth. We read of those who "did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved" (II Thessalonians 2:10). May we not be among that number.
