Four Calls From God
Blanco Church of Christ

There is the call of death. Hebrews 9:27 states, “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment...” The passage speaks of physical death that comes to all. This is the general rule that applies to the human race. In the grand scope of things we may surely say that life is as “a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). Since death is inevitable it is wise for man to always be prepared for the call. There is the call of the resurrection. Jesus said, “...all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment” (John 5:28-29). As Lazarus heard the voice of the our Lord in the darkness of the tomb (John 11:43-44) so all shall answer this call. There is also the call of judgment. Hebrews 9:27 also makes mention of this fact. Death does not eliminate or give one the ability to escape the call of judgment. The scriptures state, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (II Corinthians 5:10). Man is ultimately accountable to God for his actions. One may be praised by the world but condemned by God. One may be condemned by the world but praised by God. There is the call of the gospel. Speaking to the Christians at Thessalonica Paul said, “And it was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” (II Thessalonians 2:14). We have no choice concerning the first three calls. The fourth call is a choice. God calls through the teaching of His word. He is hoping we will respond and say yes to His calling. What about you?
