Uptown Blanco Art Center Presents “Farm and Flora”
Wednesday, July 6, 2011 • Posted July 7, 2011

Uptown Blanco Art Gallery is proud to present paintings by Janet Brooks and Akiko White, both Texas artists. Janet provides exquisite water colors of Texas flora and Akiko’s highly textured, impressionist interpretations of Texas farm animals.

Janet Brooks grew up in the tropical climate of the Texas gulf coast and was inspired as a young girl by rich diversity of nature. She later attended the University of Texas in Austin where she obtained both her BFA and MFA degrees. About her work, Janet says, “…my watercolors are both an objective and a symbolic study of rocks, shells, flowers, leaves, plants. I draw from observation, and I often allow for invention. The close study of these subjects reveals a realm delicate and dramatic, intricate and intense.” Janet is a Professor of Art at Austin Community College.

Akiko White was born and raised in Cisco, Texas. Daughter of a Japanese mother and a German/Irish father, she attended college at the McNay Art Institute in San Antonio, completing her degree at Texas State University.

“I love bright colors and thick paint. I want my audience to feel the mood that I am (in), as well as to portray what my image is feeling.” Akiko owns and operates White Acres Farm, her family farm in the Texas Hill Country. She especially loves using her farm animals and pets as her subjects. Akiko instructs Graphic Design and Illustration at San Antonio Community College.
