In last week’s article, we inquired about a military insignia that is found on the tombstone of Laura Hazel Harmon. Laura Hazel Harmon was a WAVE in the U.S. Navy. Lonie Ethridge gave us contact information for family members who shed light on the matter. Rebecca Howerton said she will install a flag at the gravesite. We also received an email and another phone call about her military service. Thank you for responding with information—it is heart warming.
Does anyone know anything about a man named Carl Berndt? His grave is marked by a homemade tombstone, located near the cemetery office, that is half buried. Only his name can be seen. He is buried in a row with Annie Darling Jones (1880-1962) and her son, Lee (we think Leroy) Darling (1910-1931), who died of a broken neck. Leroy was digging gravel on the Blanco River with his brother, Tom, and Landis Weir when the bluff caved in. He apparently died instantly and was buried the same day. It is believed that there is a family connection between Carl, Annie and Leroy.
In this section, Ova F. Cogbill Damron’s tombsstone does not have a death date. She was born in 1906 so, if she is still living, she is very old. Perhaps she is buried somewhere else. Does anyone know?
Also, at the front of the section is a small broken tombstone that only says “P J son of”. Does anyone know who’s son he is?
