Smoking – a touchy subject for those who enjoy the habit! Did you know that smoking is prohibited in most indoor venues in China and Ireland? Tasmania bars smoking in many public places including beaches.
Closer to home, New York City has banned lighting up tobacco in pedestrians plazas (read – Times Square), parks and along 14 miles of beaches. Ohio has an indoor smoking ban. Driving and smoking with children present could get you a ticket in Arkansas, Louisiana, California, Maine and some Canadian States.
Even closer to home, this past Texas legislative session considered a ban on smoking in public places but the session ended with no action being taken. Maybe next time?
Health seems to be the number one reason for banning smoking. Litter could be a second. It is disgusting to make a trip to the beach and have to sit in an ashtray. The Blanco River bank is much more enjoyable when it is butt free. This year there appears to be less tobacco trash than in the past.
The good residents of Blanco are taking better care of their environment and/or are looking out for their health. It doesn’t require legislation to “do the right thing”. It just takes people to be proactive in protecting the environment and maintaining a healthy life style.
