Joel Dean Smith, 74, of Driftwood passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2011.

Joel was born on August 9, 1936, in Blanco, Texas to Gladys Wagner Smith and Alvin Smith. He was a Navy Veteran who served his country for 20 years before retiring as a Chief Boatswain’s Mate and receiving the Good Conduct Award three times. He was loyal to all the sports teams associated with Wimberley and attended many of the games. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Wimberley.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtie Marie Smith of Driftwood; step-children, Bill Shirley of Llano, John Shirley of Arkansas, Maggie Mills of California, George and Georganne Shirley of Wimberley; grandchildren, James Torres, Crystal Torres, Danielle and Sylvia Shirley, Laura and Stephanie Loretto, Savannah Reynolds, Jack McGinty and Donovan Happley; great-grandchildren, Penelope and Chloe Gutierrez; four sisters, Darlene Drockway and Marjorie Latham of Blanco, Jamie Moreland of Johnson City, Jackie Pope of Brownwood and Aunt Fay Spencer of Georgetown.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Wimberley with burial to follow at Wimberley Cemetery.
