He graduated in 1960 from Decker High School in Decker, IN and served three years in the U.S. Army followed by 41 years as a building contractor—23 years in Wichita, KS and 18 years in Austin, TX, retiring in 2004. For the past several years he has worked as an active volunteer at the Good Samaritan food pantry in Blanco, TX, which supports the area homeless and underemployed. He was currently involved in a building expansion for that facility and had worked for many months toward its completion. He was a member of Blanco United Methodist Church where he had served as Chair of the Trustees.

He passed away on August 31, 2011, at his home in Dripping Springs, TX after a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife Judy. He is survived by a son Kelly Carmichael and wife Kim, as well as a son Bruce Sorgen, all of Dripping Springs, TX, a daughter Kendra Byrd of San Antonio, TX and three brothers, David Carmichael and wife Pat of Indian Trail, NC, Elden Carmichael and wife Pat of St. Simons Island, GA, and Lanny Carmichael and wife Debbie of Bradford, IN. He is also survived by granddaughters Jessica Carmichael, Lauren Carmichael and Hannah Sorgen of Dripping Springs, Shawna Desens of Orting, WA and Cassie Meier of Alexandria, VA, as well as grandson Scott Byrd of San Antonio, TX.

Terry’s steadfast and stable leadership and commitment to the Blanco community, his good natured humor and his initiative, candor, and willingness to get the difficult jobs done were testament to his character.

A memorial service will be held at Blanco United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan, PO Box 298, Blanco, TX 78606.
