My name is Kim Leifeste Garza. I was born in Pasadena, Texas, and I'm happy I found my way to make my home here in Blanco 13 years ago.

In April of 2010, I became an "Avon Lady," and in doing so I have met some of the most wonderful people, whom I now call friends. I would like to tell you about two of them in particular, as you learn a bit about me along the way.

First I met Peggy Berryhill of Peggy's Playhouse Daycare, who invited me to be a part of her Relay For Life team "The Pajama Mamas." This past year through bake sales, raffles, our annual garage sale and fundraisers with Premier Jewelry and Avon, we raised over $6,000 for cancer research. These amazing women are hard workers and dedicated to the cause, and I am proud to be one of them. We couldn't do what we do, without the support of the gracious citizens of Blanco. We may be a small community, but we are a mighty one!

Then I met Olga Ibarra, who is the President of the Tejas Art Club here in Blanco. Needless to say, I joined the Art Club, where I found a wonderful group of local artist who help and support each other in their art.

I first became interested in art when I was about 11 or 12 years old. I had taken a few art classes here and there, but never found what was right for me. Of course, it would have helped if I had known what I was looking for! I had always been drawn to black and white – pencil sketching; then Olga introduced me to color (kicking and screaming all the way) through painting. Her style of teaching offers direction with the freedom to be yourself. When you have finished your project, it truly has you in it.

I would like to invite everyone to come and see my painting for yourself at our Open House on Friday the 16th at the Blanco Seniors Center. There will be many pictures from our local artists for you to view, as well as purchase. We look forward to seeing you there for refreshments, fun and to celebrate some of our local talent!
