Caregiver Discussion Group Offered by Cancer Resource Center
Wednesday, September 7, 2011 • Posted September 16, 2011

“Caring without losing yourself” is the topic of a free, four-session discussion group beginning at the end of September and aimed at helping those who are caring for those with cancer or other life-changing health condition.

“Caregivers need to maintain their own health and identity while providing care for those who depend on them the most,” said Rick McMinn, discussion leader for the four-Wednesday sessions. “These group discussions will provide a confidential forum where caregivers can discuss their own needs.”

Sessions are scheduled on four consecutive Wednesdays: September 28 and October 5, 12 and 19. All four will be at the HCM Cancer Resource Center (CRC) from 1 to 2 p.m. The center is located on the first floor of the Brune Professional Building, 808 Reuben Street in Fredericksburg.

McMinn will guide the group through an exploration of the challenges experienced by caregivers. “Our goal for participants is to share coping strategies and gain insights that can be useful in their own situations,” he said. “Caregivers have many demands on their time, so we’re aiming for a brief but meaningful experience for them.”

There is no charge to attend the four discussion groups, but reservations are necessary by calling the CRC’s Donna Lafferty at 830-990-6648.
