8th Grade Panthers Bust Sonora 38-0
Wednesday, September 28, 2011 • Posted September 29, 2011

For the second week in a row, the eighth grade Panthers put on a spectacular show of highly anticipated talent with Panther-style performance and execution. The Panther defense outdid themselves from the previous week by shutting down the Sonora Colts and only allowing 20 yards of offense in the first half. The Panther offense stayed on pace, mixing their running and passing game for a combined total offense of 225 yards.

Sonora elected to receive first and started just inside their 30 yard line; however, Panthers’ defensive end Gus Martinez recovered a fumble on the Colts’ first play. This put the Panthers on Sonora’s 22 yard line and, on the first play, Chase Horton, with the help of a key block provided by lineman Canyon Burkhart, ran straight through the right side of the Colt defense for Blanco’s first touchdown, extra point missed, Panthers out front 6-0. The Colts next drive started from their 30 yard line; however, tough defensive plays, such as the one made by linebacker Adrian Dominguez causing a 15-yard loss, forced the Colts to punt. Blanco picked up at Sonora’s 35. On Blanco’s second play from scrimmage, running back “Too Fast” Eddie Torres ran a counter around the left side 33 yards for another Blanco touchdown, awesome catch in the end zone by Chase Horton for the extra point; Panthers now led 14-0. The Colts started again, this time from inside their 15 yard line and drove just past midfield but turned the ball over on downs. The Panthers took over on their 48 yard line, but, after a dismal set of downs, the Colts took over at the same spot. The Colts came out passing but the defensive shut them down again. The Panthers took over on their 49 yard line and, two plays later, running back Adrian Dominguez ran 44 yards for the touchdown, extra point good, Panthers now led 22-0. The Colts brought the next kickoff back to their 35 yard line. On third and long, the Colts threw a deep pass across the middle, but defensive back Aaron Uballe timed it perfectly and busted up what would have been a big gainer, with the Colts forced to punt again. The Panthers started at their 40 yard line. A give to Dominguez up the middle added on 15 yards, a reception by Horton added on another 20 yards, a pitch-out to Dominguez again added 16 yards, and finally a reverse from 13 yards out run in by Torres ended the drive with another Panther score, extra point good, with Blanco’s lead going into the half at 30-0.

Blanco began on their 35 to start the second half. The drive started with a counter by running back Aaron Uballe for 10 yards. Running back Ryan Ronces added 5 more, another counter by Uballe added 12 more, then Ronces around the right side for 5 more, Uballe picked up 5 more to the left, Ronces ran for 12, then quarterback Trent Dechert capped the drive off with an eight-yard touchdown run, extra point good, Panthers led 38-0. The Panther defense allowed the Colts a little more yardage during the last quarter of the game, but finally the Panther offense took over on downs and ran out the clock, with the final score 38-0.

Offense Stats: Dominguez – 5 carries for 77 yards, 1 touchdown; Torres – 3 carries for 55 yards, 2 touchdowns; Horton – 1 carry for 22 yards, 3 receptions for 30 yards, 1 touchdown; Ronces – 3 carries for 25 yards; Wagner – Passing 3 for 5, for 30 yards, 1 INT; Uballe – 3 carries for 32 yards; Dechert – 1 carry for 8 yards, 1 touchdown
