Cub Scouts Out and About
Wednesday, October 12, 2011 • Posted October 13, 2011

August and September were busy months for the cub scouts after the fun of summer was over – it was time to get to work. The cub scouts did Show and Sell Popcorn at Blanco National Bank and Stripes, which is where the scouts actually have the popcorn on hand to sell to customers. The scouts have to use their manners, voices of persuasion, and money skills to sell popcorn. The scouts are now in the take order phase of the popcorn sell and that will last until the end of this month; you may have a scout come up and ask you to order popcorn. The money raised from the popcorn goes to buy badges, belt loops and different awards for the cubs. It also allows us to take educational trips so the boys can learn about the outdoors and different historical places in Texas.

We also had recruitment night at the Blanco Elementary School which resulted in five new scouts. We have had some fun den meetings; we made marshmallow shooters where the boys learned how to measure, cut PVC pipe, hammer pieces together and take instruction. They have earned their aquanaut badges in the Lockwood’s pool by learning the buddy system, different swim strokes, and rescue measure of swimming. We have gone on a fishing trip to a private tank in Hye and caught catfish. This was a real treat for the boys; they caught lots of fish and a couple other things. They also learned how to bait the hook, cast the line, and set the hook. They learned the best way to reel in a catfish, and that you have to have patience to land the big ones. They also learned how to take a catfish off the line. If you have a boy in 1st through 5th grade who would be interested in becoming a scout, please contact Denise Wagner at 830-833-1939. We have some great adventures planned for this year.
