Changes in requirements for yard/garage sale signs are now in place, with the new sign ordinance passed by city council at the council meeting last week. Garage/yard sale signs fall under the category of special event signs.

The new ordinance requires permits to be obtained from the city office for special event signs including those for yard/garage sales (Sec. 26.02.001(u)). Off-premises signs are prohibited except for yard/garage sale signs, but the signs may only be installed on the day of the event during daylight hours (sec26.06.070 (d)). Signs may not be posted on trees or utility poles.

So, remember to get your permit, get up early and get those signs out, and make the effort to remove the signs promptly on the day of your sale. If you don’t, the city has the right to charge you for the cost of removing your signs.
