Help Keep Blanco Free of Litter
Wednesday, December 7, 2011 • Posted December 8, 2011 10:25 AM

Each year, over 1 billion pieces of litter will accumulate on Texas highways. Tobacco trash (cigarette packaging, lighters, butts, chewing tobacco, etc.) comprises 43% of all litter on Texas roads, and cigarette butts account for 13% of that 43%. In Texas, that means 130 million butts will be discarded out of car windows, left at picnic areas, or dropped along the streets. The use of tobacco products not only kills, it is the greatest form of litter in Texas. Picking up litter is expensive. In 2009, the citizens of Texas spent $47 million to pick up trash along the Texas roadsides; these are tax dollars that could be spent in other ways to improve the quality of life in the state. Butt cans are placed around Blanco’s Square, the park has plenty of trash cans, and automobiles are still manufactured with ashtrays. Therefore, please keep Texas and Blanco beautiful by properly disposing of tobacco products.
