Dulcimer Classes Set to Begin Feb. 3
Wednesday, January 25, 2012 • Posted January 27, 2012

Music is known for its healing properties, and a mountain dulcimer can be an easy instrument to start with, according to Maureen “Mo” Augustine.

Ms. Augustine, a winter Texan and 16-year breast cancer survivor, will teach a series of six free lessons beginning in February at the Hill Country Memorial Cancer Resource Center (CRC) in Fredericksburg.

“This class encourages exploration of the fun and healing aspects of playing a soothing instrument with an American heritage,” Donna Lafferty, CRC coordinator, said. “If you have a dulcimer, now is the time to get it off the wall or out from under the bed and join us.”

It will be the third series of such classes at the CRC. “It was a real eye-opener that first time to find out that there were so many people in the Fredericksburg area who owned a mountain dulcimer and wanted to learn to play it,” Ms. Lafferty said. “Our class size was limited to 10 people, and when that filled up quickly, we had 14 more waiting for a place in the second round.”

The classes are open to any interested adult and are scheduled Fridays, Feb. 3 through March 16, from 10 a.m. to noon at the CRC located in the Brune Professional Building at 808 Reuben Street. Reservations are required by calling 830-990-6648.
