Keep Blanco Beautiful
Wednesday, February 15, 2012 • Posted February 17, 2012 9:06 AM

Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup is the nation's largest community improvement program, taking place annually from March 1 through May 31. Activities can include beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, removing graffiti, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs and litter-free events — anything that keeps communities beautiful.

In 2011, 1,905 Great American Cleanup events were held, with more than 90,000 volunteers contributing 417,448 hours in 912 communities across the state. Blanco was one of the Texas communities that held several events in 2011 as they had for the prior 12 years. During the 2011 Great American Cleanup, approximately 150 Blanco volunteers cleaned 10 miles of local and state highways and 3 miles of Blanco River banks. They collected 2,000 pounds of trash at the Keep Blanco Beautiful Trash-off and Blanco River Cleanup. Mattresses and fencing was also collected. The Beautification Committee worked every Tuesday to plant and maintain the trees and plants in Bindseil Park, on city property and around the square. There are many volunteers who daily walk around with their black plastic bags picking up trash around Blanco. We are happy to see Maria Serrano out again picking up aluminum cans.

The signature event for Keep America Beautiful is the annual trash-off. In Blanco it is the KBB "Don't Mess With Texas" annual trash-off and city-wide cleanup and the Blanco River Cleanup. This year the event will be held on April 14, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. We will meet at Bindseil Park and we will have the popular KBB t-shirts for the volunteers. After working to clean up the schools, parks, highways, and city easements, there will be hot dogs and drinks at Bindseil Park.

Please start organizing leaders and teams now, with the names of the team members and shirt sizes. I will have the forms for the lists and for liability releases to give to the leaders and will need to have these returned by March 9. We always have room for volunteers on the 14th who have not signed up. If you know ahead that you will volunteer and are not a part of a team, please call Retta Martin at 833-4720 or Martha Gosnell at 210-845-5384 with the information prior to March 9 so that you will have a t-shirt ready.

I appreciate all of the volunteers who have been faithful in keeping Blanco clean and beautiful for the past 12 years. 2012 is the new opportunity for our city officials to enforce the environment codes and to keep our homes, businesses, and town clean and litter-free.
