Listening to your inner voice
Wednesday, January 7, 2009 • Posted January 6, 2009

What is our inner voice, and where does it come from? If I told you I believe God has spoken to me, some of you would probably scoff and say ‘yeah, right!’ You might ask how do I know it was God, or you may feel I’m not ‘holy enough’so why would God speak to me? How do we know God’s voice?

John 10: 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, 29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”

I’m so curious, and I love to read, so I seek for Wisdom and find it! I researched the words: conscience, spirit and soul. I wish I had room to share it all with you. What I discovered will take me a few weeks to study, but here are a few good things to share.

The conscience is a wonderful thing. It is the faculty that decides the lawfulness of our actions as to right and wrong.

Romans 2:12-16- “12 When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God’s written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. 13 For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. 14 Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. 15 They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. 16 And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.”

By the Gentiles “instinctively” obeying the law, it proves they have the law written in their hearts. The conscience bears witness of obedience or condemns for disobedience, proving God has not left men without light sufficient to justify or condemn in the judgment. It does not say here that keeping the law, or doing by nature what the law requires, saves the soul in either case. We must be born again in addition to this to be saved.

The word ‘conscience’ is not found in the Old Testament (KJV). But here are New Testament places to find it: John 8:9; 1 Timothy 4:2;Hebrews 9:9, 14; 10:2; Acts 24:16; 1 Timothy 3:9; 2 Timothy 1:3; 1 Corinthians 8:7, 10, 12; Titus 1:15; Romans 2:12-15; 9:1; 2 Corinthians 1:12; Acts 23:1-1; 1 Timothy 1:5, 19; 1 Peter 2:19; 3:16, 21; Hebrews 13:18; Matthew 27:3; 1 Corinthians 10:25-29; Hebrews 10:22; Hebrews 9:9.

Spirit means invisible force. The spirit of man is the intellect, will, mind, conscience, and other invisible faculties that make him a free moral agent and a rational being. Both the soul and spirit of man are immortal. They are so closely related that it is hard to distinguish the finest details of difference between them, but there is a difference. This is clear from 1 Th. 5:23; Heb. 4:12. In general, we can say that the spirit is that which knows (1 Cor. 2:11), and the soul is that which feels. Both make the inner man which leaves the body at death.

God has a soul! See Matthew 12:18; and our souls do go straight to heaven (or hell) when we die, without a “waiting” period. See Revelation 6:9 and 20:11-15. As always, please check with your pastor, if you have any questions. My goal is to motivate and of course, share God's Word!

Galatians 5 – “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”
