Softball Season in Full Swing

The Panther softball team added eight wins to their season record this past week to climb to an awesome 14-0 start for 2012.

The Blanco girls took on Johnson City on February 28 and posted a 12-2, five-inning run rule victory over the Eagles. Meaghen Seales pitched five strike-outs and Callie Culton added one. Mackenzie Johnson slammed three singles, Callie hammered three doubles, and Abbie Culton added two singles and a triple to lead the Panther batters.

On Friday, March 2, the Panthers played in the Blanco Varsity Softball Tournament. The Blanco squad battled the Fredericksburg Billies to a 6-5 win. Callie tossed five strike-outs, with Meaghen throwing one. Callie hit two singles and Payton Savarino nailed a single for two RBI.

The next Blanco opponent in the tournament was the Llano Lady Jackets. The Panthers snagged a close one, 3-2. Meaghen pitched three strike-outs. Leslie McClinton and Abbie Culton each hit two singles. Mackenzie Johnson swatted a single for two RBI.

Lago Vista became the next Blanco victim on Friday evening with the Panthers winning 17-0. Callie pitched two innings with two strike-outs and Payton pitched the third inning, adding one strike-out. Leslie McClinton, Meaghen Seales, and Kelsey Schwind each smashed two singles. Callie whacked a single and a double. Callie and Kelsey tallied three RBI each.

On Saturday, the Panthers repeated the 17-0 score over the Ingram Warriors. Meaghen pitched two innings, throwing three strike-outs, and Payton pitched the third inning. Kelsey leveled a single, a triple, and a homerun, with six RBI. Abbie hit a single and two doubles for two RBI. Deanna Sevilla, Leslie, and Callie all blasted two singles.

In the tournament semi-finals, Blanco again squared off with Fredericksburg and were once again victorious, 6-5. Callie pitched six innings with eleven strike-outs. Meaghen and Callie each hit two singles and scored two runs. Leslie blasted one single and one double for a RBI.

Blanco leveled the Llano Jackets, 8-1, in the tournament final. Meaghen pitched two innings with one strike-out and Callie pitched five innings and threw five strike-outs. Leslie hit a single and a double for three runs and one RBI, while Callie hit two singles for two RBI.

The team played outstanding defense throughout the course of the tournament. Catcher Angel Williams and shortstop Leslie McClinton connected for several throwdowns for outs at second base. Infielders Taylor Guinn, Callie, Kelsey, and Leslie made outstanding stops. Outfielders Megan Brown, Abbie, Meaghen, and Payton made tremendous catches. The pitching staff, Callie, Meaghen, and Payton, held tough through the six games in two days.

On Monday, the ladies traveled to Huber Ranch in Seguin to play the Navarro Panthers. The BHS Panthers took the win 13-3. Callie pitched seven innings with five strike-outs. Taylor, Mackenzie, and Deanna each hit one single and one double. Callie added two singles, one double, and three RBI. The Blanco girls cancelled out their six errors with 18 hits, including 14 singles and four doubles, and nine RBI.

The Panthers play in the Fredericksburg Tournament this Friday and Saturday; district games begin next week.
