1Thess 5:23 says, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit (pneuma) and soul (Psuche) and body (soma) be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Last week we started to look at Revival, something desperately needed in our individual lives, churches, and nation. The first lesson focused on Jesus’ call to repentance and zealousness to the lukewarm church of Laodicea. This week, we will look at an absolute fundamental teaching that often ushers in personal renewal, and could even help spawn the great awakening we should desire in our country. That teaching is spirit, soul, and body. The Christian absolutely must grasp this teaching to: 1. Rightly understand God’s Word ( 2Tim 2:15) 2. Know who he is in Christ (2Cor 5:17-18). 3. To live the victorious, overcoming Christian life (Jn 10:10). Let’s get into God’s Word.
Learn this fact: You are a spirit. You posses a soul. You live in a body. Your spirit is what gets born again at the moment of conversion or regeneration (Jn 3:3, 6). Your soul and body do not (1Pt 1:9, Rom 8:23). Your soul (invisible you, mind, will, emotions) and your body (flesh) are in the process of being saved. Their salvation will not be complete until the day of The Lord. However, the regeneration of our spirit, and the indwelling Holy Spirit, are the down payment, or earnest, of our complete salvation.
Your spiritual salvation is complete. You are, in your spirit, as Jesus is (1Jn 4:17). You are a totally brand new creation (2Cor 5:17), created in righteousness and true holiness (Eph 4:24). You are sanctified (set apart as holy) and perfected forever in your spirit (Heb 10:14). You are complete in your spirit (Col 2:10). You have the faith of Jesus Christ (Gal 2:20). You have been sealed by the Holy Spirit, and sin is neither generated in your spirit, nor does sin touch your spirit. This truth is totally awesome! This truth will set you free – when you know it (Jn 8:32). Abundant, excessive, overflowing eternal life is right now (Jn 10:10, 17:3, Gal 1:4)! That will start a revival in you!
You see, although you are completely one with Jesus in your spirit at true conversion (1Cor 6:17, Rom 8:9), your soul and body remain the same – unless you make the conscious effort to change them. We must sanctify our soul and body (1Pt 3:15, 1Thess 4:3-4). As stated in Romans 12:1-2, we must offer our bodies (flesh) as living sacrifices, and we must renew our minds (soul) in God’s Word. This does not automatically happen when you are saved! It is in these two areas (soul and body), that you must discipline yourself. You must take your thoughts captive. You must make the body subject to the spirit. You must yield to the Spirit. Yield your will; your mind; your emotions; your desires; your body – to the Holy Spirit that dwells within you. Be a spirit led believer.
We must relate to God the way He relates to us. And how are we told to relate to Him? We are told by Jesus to worship The Father in spirit and truth (Jn 4:24). God is a Spirit. He relates to our spirit. If you are born again, He relates to you as you are in spirit. He has declared you justified, righteous, sanctified, holy – in your spirit. This is how God sees you. It is how He created you. This does not make light of sin, but it does make much of Jesus! I know I am unconditionally loved and accepted in the Beloved! I am as righteous on a bad day as I am on a good day! This does not compel me to be bad, but rather motivates me to be good! If I sin, I confess it and repent – and go on with God. I haven’t lost my right standing in any way with Him. By His grace, through faith, am I saved – and by that I stay saved (Eph 2:8-9, Gal 3:3)! My righteousness is of God, it is not my own!
A firm grasp of the truth of spirit, soul, and body will ignite a fire in you if you let it. I have said some things hard to comprehend (2Pt 3:16), which some are too weak or scared to embrace, and others will pervert to their own destruction. However, for those with ears to hear, and pure hearts for God, and who are hungry and thirsty for God – these are some of the most liberating, peace bringing, joy producing, holiness invoking truths you’ll ever hear!
Pray for a great awakening! A mighty outpouring! A revival of true Christian religion! In your life; your family; your church; your nation. Pray everyday. Fast once a week. Expect great things in the Name of Jesus! Until next time, rejoice in The Lord!
