Benjamin Pilon, a Blanco resident and filler operator/quality specialist at Real Ale Brewing Company, wondered what to do when a quality control issue at the brewery left him with over 200 full cases of beer to dump out.
“Trying to figure out the fastest way to open all those beers,” Pilon said, “I started wondering what the world record was for ‘most bottle caps removed’ or ‘most bottles opened’ in one minute.”
The current Guinness World Record for most crown cup bottles opened in one minute is 96, set by Raffaele Quaranta in Taranto, Italy, on August 1, 2009.
Pilon took two video attempts last month. On his first attempt, 97 bottles were set up on a table and he quickly opened them all in under a minute. For the second attempt, 120 bottles were set up and Pilon opened 110 bottles in 60 seconds.
Those attempts weren’t official, but Pilon has been approved by Guinness World Records to make an official attempt under their guidelines, which include a notary, two or three witnesses, and video from multiple angles with a stopwatch in view. Pilon is working on plans now to make it into the record books.
“All in all, this sounds like fun!” Pilon said. “I am getting a lot of positive feedback from people about this.”
Outside of working at Real Ale, Pilon gives drum lessons at the Hill Country School of Music with Trevor McGuire. Pilon’s wife, Merannda Button, also teaches violin lessons with McGuire.
