Runners and walkers of just about every age will converge on Fredericksburg Saturday, April 28, for the 19th annual Fredericksburg Wildflower Run/Walk.
“There’s something for just about everyone, no matter if you’re into timed running, walking or strolling leisurely along with children or pets,” said Dawn Bourgeois, director of the sponsoring Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center.
The route will follow a scenic course in and around Fredericksburg, beginning and ending at Market Square downtown where parking, restrooms and registration will be available.
This year’s event is dedicated to the memory of Larry Nevels. Nevels served on the Wildflower Run committee up until his passing last November due to complications from a bone marrow transplant. Nevels was instrumental in the initial vision of the event and the partnership between the Fredericksburg Academic Boosters and the Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center. The event benefits the Fredericksburg Academic Boosters by recognizing and encouraging student academic achievement. It offers 5K and 10K distances for runners and walkers of all ages, along with a children’s fun run for ages 12 and younger.
Electronic chip timing will be provided by All Sports Timing out of Austin.
Stretch and pre-warm-up is sponsored and led by fitness professionals from the Wellness Center at 8 a.m. near the race starting line. The run begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 8:35 a.m. The children’s fun run begins at 10:00 a.m.
Ms. Bourgeois said participation in the children’s fun has increased in popularity in recent years. “Our 200-yard distance has children as young as two participating in their first run, and our mile distance is perfect for kids not yet ready for the 5K,” she said. Both the one-mile and 200-yard routes end at the official finish line of the 5k and 10K run where fans are cheering as the youngsters cross the line.
Awards for run contestants only will be presented for male and female categories (first-, second- and third-place finishers for both the 5K and 10K races). Age divisions this year are 5-6,7-8,9-10, 11-14, 15-21, 22-29, 30-35, 36-41, 42-47, 48-53, 54-59, 60-65, 66-69, 70-75, 76-79 and 80+.
Recognition also will go to first-place top male and top female in both the 5K and 10K runs, and special awards to all fun run children participants. Dr Pepper has donated a bike to be given away to a child 12 or under who is signed up for the run, walk or fun run. To be eligible for awards, runners must wear a run number with a timing chip embedded in it (provided).
All run and walk registrants will receive souvenir T-shirts, and the first 200 registrants will receive a jar of wildflower jelly from Fischer & Wieser Specialty Foods of Fredericksburg.
Participants may sign up at a cost of $15 per walker and $20 per runner. Entry forms that are mailed should be postmarked no later than April 20. Late- or race-day registration at Market Square is $25 per person. Fee for children is $1 per child.
