Softball Season Ends at Regional Semifinals

The Blanco softball team finished their record-breaking season with 27 wins and 3 losses. The team lost to Alpine in the Regional Semifinal playoff round in San Angelo on May 18th and May 19th. Playing a best 2-of-3 series on the San Angelo State University softball field, the Lady Panthers took on the Lady Bucks falling 1-5 and 1-5 in two games.

In the Friday evening game the first two innings remained scoreless. In the 3rd inning Alpine used 2 doubles, 2 walks, and a sacrifice bunt to score 3 runs. In the 4th inning the Lady Bucks added 2 more runs on 2 walks, a sacrifice fly, a single, and a Blanco error. In the 5th inning the Blanco team scored 1 run on a single by Leslie McClinton followed by an overthrow error by Alpine a 1st base to bring McClinton home. The Blanco batters could manage only 5 hits in the game against the strong Alpine defense and pitcher. McClinton swiped 2 singles with Meaghen Seales hitting 1 single with a walk. Kelsey Schwind and Taylor Guinn each added a single.

Callie Culton pitched 3.3 innings for 2 strikeouts, 4 walks, and only 2 hits. Seales pitched 3.6 innings, 1 walk and 2 hits.

On Saturday the Panthers scored a run in the first inning when Callie Culton connected for a hit to bring Seales home and to put herself on 3rd base. Schwind then laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring Culton home but Callie was tagged out in a very close call at home plate. Alpine also scored a run in the first inning to keep the game tied until the 3rd inning. In the 3rd the Lady Bucks scored 3 runs on walks and errors.

Alpine added another run in the 5th inning to take the lead 5-1, the eventual final score. Blanco had 7 hits in the game. Seales and Schwind hit a single with a walk and Payton Savarino and Culton each had a hit.

Culton pitched 4.3 innings with 4 strikeouts, 2 hits, and 5 walks. Seales pitched 1.6 innings with 1 hit and 1 walk.

The Panthers finish the season as Regional Quarterfinal Champs. Senior members of the softball team are Megan Brown, Andrea Torre and Felicia Skillman. Senior softball trainer is Susannah Campbell.
