Friday night lights Llano style, minus the lights, in the old Llano Stadium known now as the "Dauber Dome". The old stadium stood proud once again as the 2015 version of Powder Puff Football took place on the grass and weed field from days gone by. It was going back to a time where football was just a game played for fun in a stadium with stone and grass bleachers. The reason for the location, artificial turf being laid at the present Yellow Jacket Field, progress in a way, but on Friday night, Llano got to relive some history.
The game itself was definitely 2015, graduating Lady Jackets and the class of 2016 battling it out for bragging rights in the annual Powder Puff game pitting juniors against seniors, friends and teammates against friends and teammates. From the opening kickoff from senior Naysa Napolez to junior Katelyn Blair, it was non-stop action until the last snap of the ball and a celebration by the Junior Ladies that will go down in history.
It was all seniors for most of the first half with quarterback Claire Williams leading the team down field on their first two drives with the help of running back Hali Lewis and a long pass to Lacey Redden for a touchdown. Senior Christy Vassar ran the ball in for the extra point conversion giving the Ladies of 2015 a 7 point lead. After stopping the underclassmen on their second drive the soon to be graduates took the ball again gaining positive yardage with a Williams to Sloan Fiedler toss and solid running by Lewis who took the ball in for a 13 point senior lead. The extra point failed leaving the score at 13-0.
The junior girls began to regroup before time ran out in the first half. Behind the running of Shaylee Jameson and quarterback Courtney Mize, the younger Lady Jackets gained a couple of first downs and then a touchdown pass from Mize to Blair that made the game a little more respectable.
Trailing 13-7 as the second half began, the junior ladies kicked off with a determination in their eyes that showed they were in it for the victory. Williams took the senior snap, faked to Vassar and threw the ball down field only to be intercepted by Mize who took the ball into the end zone evening the score at 13, followed by Jameson's extra point try giving the juniors their first lead of the game, which they never gave up.
The senior ladies weren't through, twice moving the ball down field with consistent running from Lewis and one of the best catches of the game by Redden, they just couldn't get the ball in the end zone. The juniors once again took the ball with authority, Mize connecting to Brenna Williams and Janae Watson for good gains and finally connecting with Blair for another touchdown putting the juniors ahead, 20-13, the extra point pass to Watson failed keeping the seniors within reach.
As the seniors took the ball for the last time there just wasn't enough left to find the end zone, add a junior defense that was not going to be beat. The juniors took the ball a last time, just needing a first down to put the game away. Their plan was simple, run Jameson right, run Jameson left and run Jameson up the middle, the plan worked. The junior class, the class of 2016 took down the graduating class of 2015 in a game for the ages, and one played in an aged, but proud stadium.
