Dear Editor,

What is going on with our Mayor and City Council? Instead of being here for all the citizens of Blanco they are catering to one citizen and their family. We want to make sure that all citizens are aware of this.

We are the homeowners who live on Blanco Avenue east of Loop 163. When we all moved to this area there wasn’t a road here and we were promised one would not be built. At our own expense we put in a paved driveway to our homes and business (at an expense of $13,000 to $15,000) and have continued to main that at our own expense for 17 years.

It has always been a dead end street and our only way out has been to go around like everyone else. Those of us who live on East Blanco Avenue are perfectly happy to continue doing this.

But a citizen who lives on street over on San Antonio Street (also a dead end street) went before the city council to complain that they wanted to open up the east side of Blanco Avenue to Loop 163.

The city council voted to do this without any discussion with any homeowners at all.

When we spoke to a city council person about coming to the next meeting he told us not to bother because no action was going to be taken yet. We were told a questionnaire would be sent out before a vote would be taken. It wasn’t. They voted on it that very night.

If the people who live on San Antonio Street want an opening to Loop 163, then let them open their own road.

Frankly at this time it is a waste of our taxpayer money but if the city wants to spend the money opening the road then they should open the road of those who want an opening to Loop 163 and leave ours closed.

They have more people who live on that road. We don’t want to spend our taxpayer dollars and there are only a handful of us on East Blanco Avenue. It doesn’t make sense! Since the vote, the “driveway” has been officially opened as a road even though part of it is our yards. The city council says that right now they have no funds to do anything with the road.

The city council has said they are going to put it in the budget for the next year to redo this road. I don’t understand why the city council is wasting all of our tax dollars to put in a road that isn’t necessary and doesn’t benefit more than one or two people in Blanco.

There are so many more important needs in Blanco than this. There are roads in Blanco now that many, many citizens travel on daily that need repair or to be repaved.

It could benefit the fire department, E.M.S. or police department. If the citizens on San Antonio Street want a paved road or opening to Loop 163 let them pay for the paving as we did.

We urge you to be at the next city council meeting to stand up for your rights in how your tax dollars are being spent.

Thank You,

East Side Blanco Avenue Homeowners
