Galveston’s Moody Gardens Corpse Flower to Bloom
Wednesday, June 13, 2012 • Posted June 14, 2012

Ah, it seemed like yesterday when our Corpse Flower was only a tiny bud. Look at how much she's grown since May 23. Morticia is now at 53 inches tall and 38 inches in circumference. The bloom is getting closer and this weekend might be the magical date!

The spadix is continuing to stretch out and the sepals are slowly peeling away. Once all the sepals unfurl, that's when the Corpse Flower is in full bloom. Sadly, the full bloom only lasts between one to two days.

Corpse Flower Fun Fact: In full bloom, the Corpse Flower opens up the spathe, the leafy-like petals, and reveals a deep maroon color. This coloration compliments the potent odor released from the flower by resembling red meat. From the smell to the color, all of the flower's unique aspects help attract its pollinators: carrion beetles and sweat flies.
