What God’s Word Says About Our Spirit/Soul
Part 3

Where do our spirits and souls go when we die?

In John, chapter 11, the death of Lazarus is told. John 11:11-16 “11After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” 12His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 14Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. 15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. 16Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Thomas was making a wisecrack to verses 7, 8, 9 and 10, because Jesus told them he wanted to go to Judea, and the disciples reminded him that the people in Judea had tried to stone him the last time they passed through and Jesus made a statement that you’ll need to read for yourself in verses 7-10! We are all human and, like Thomas, spew dumb things out of our mouths! God created us, so He obviously knows our weaknesses. Many of us are like Thomas, but in John chapter 20:28 it is written “28Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” I want to be one of those who are blessed!

In several other places in the New Testament, Jesus speaks of people sleeping, instead of being dead. Perhaps that’s why some believe we go to sleep (our spirit and soul) and wait for Jesus to resurrect us when He raptures us, because of the Scripture that speaks of the dead who will rise first, and then the living.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 “13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

This is not the end of my search. There is much, much more to learn! As I continue searching, I’ll share with you, but for now, if I were to be killed today, I’m content to believe I will be resurrected when Christ comes back for His church, which consists of all of us who believe in Christ Jesus as our Lord, and have a personal relationship with Him.

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Lord, I’m trusting in You, believing Your will for me is better than mine. But I still want to know where my spirit will be, and I believe God’s Word does tell us. Jesus said “For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Mt. 13:12

I want more of His Word in me, so that I will have more of it! So I earnestly seek His wisdom through reading His Word. I believe He gives understanding to those who have His Holy Spirit dwelling in them; and seek Him through the reading of His Word.

In Matthew 13:9-13, it is written “9Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

10And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

11He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

12For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

13Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand."
