Life with Jesus, My New Friend
Wednesday, September 5, 2012 • Posted September 7, 2012

Our Sunday School lesson this morning took us to the book of Hebrews, chapter 10 to one of my favorite Scriptures “30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.”

Many people like this Scripture! My friends and I are sharing favorite Scriptures via email, and we send out one Scripture to someone we don’t know, but receive many back from new friends in Christ. It’s truly awesome to find out their favorites are mine, also! Wonder why? Could it be because we are going through the same type of problems that require the same weapon? We are in a spiritual war, you know.

I remember when I just lived, only believing in Christ Jesus, but not knowing Him personally. My life was miserable without Him. Do you know Christ Jesus? We can know Him, and now that I do, praise God, He helps me! And truly, He is my best friend as it is written in John 15:14-15, “14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

For myself, while going through problems in life, reading my Bible but still not connected to Christ, the Holy Spirit was teaching me that people I trusted were actually harming me when I turned to them for advice with my problems. They really didn’t know the situation well enough to advise me because I held things back that I didn’t want them to know. But the Holy Spirit knows all, and He guided me to quit calling my friends for advice. Soon I did not have anyone to call. Who do you call when you quit leaning on friends and family? Counselors don’t know either. I tried them. I paid them lots of money to help my kids after a divorce from a spouse who abused them.

When I asked God for new friends, He gave them to me- He truly did. I realized that just like you really can’t hunt for a good husband or wife in a bar, you don’t find Christian friends just anywhere. Usually, if they love God like I do, they go to church! I decided to shop for a new church home and found one with people who showed me love when I walked in the door. I felt accepted (not criticized or looked down upon with judgmental eyes) and began to learn of our Lord through hearing His Word preached.

Romans 10:17-18 “17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.”

When you begin walking with Christ, you begin being attacked by the unseen forces of evil, you truly do, and it is in ways you can’t discern without God’s Holy Spirit showing you in His Wisdom. By reading, asking, praying, and learning God’s Word, the Holy Ghost begins unveiling His truth and you can see the guiles and treachery in people’s body language, words they speak that show you they are lying, etc. Things in the past you had ignored, not seen, or made excuses for because you were the same way. When you disassociate yourself from something harmful, it begins to repulse you, like smelling second hand smoke does to me since I quit.

These favorite Scriptures, if spoken verbally and meditated upon, are the Lord’s sword of the Spirit, and do cut through the darkness, and cause the devil and his evil cohorts to depart “for a season” as is written in Luke 4:13- “13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.”

You can quit avenging yourself (which only plants a bad seed you will reap) and let God avenge you! God’s spiritual law of reaping what you sow is true, and you needn’t pay back, lie, cheat, or steal your way through life. We need to live as Jesus taught us and let Him pay back as is written in Romans 12:19 “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

Hebrews 10:29-31 “29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God”.

Helpful strokes of the sword of the Spirit:

Proverbs 3:5-6 “5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Jeremiah 29:11 “11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Romans 8:28 “28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Philippians 4:13 “13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

And as one friend put it, “Turn it over to Him and let your Heart be at peace.” Amen.
