After pulling out a last-minute victory this past Friday over Karnes City, Blanco claimed an area championship and picked up their eighth win of the season. The Blanco Panthers will advance to face East Bernard this coming Friday, with hopes of advancing to the Region IV Championship game.
The Badgers proved to be one of the stronger opponents the Panthers have faced all year as the 9 and 1 team from Karnes City sported one of the better defenses in South Texas, having recorded 4 shutouts in district play. However, Blanco proved quickly that KC would not get a fifth shutout and the Panthers scored on their opening drive, covering 38 yards in 3 plays to see Tim Goodman score on a 28-yard run at 9:41 in the first quarter. Aikman Elrod added the PAT to make the initial score 7 to 0 in favor of Blanco.
The Panthers continued to control the first half, scoring again in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Colton Elrod. Although Blanco missed the extra point, the half-time score became 13 to 0.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Badgers finally came to life in the fourth quarter, scoring back-to-back TDs on runs of 6 and 22 yards by QB Dillon Lopez. After two successful PA’s, Karnes City had their first lead of the game with just over 4 minutes remaining.
Trailing by 1, Colton Childress returned the ensuing kickoff to the Karnes City 35-yard line to set the Panthers up with excellent field position. From here, Blanco ate up over 3 minutes on 7 plays to regain the lead on a 6-yard run by Goodman. QB Sam Isenberg then connected with Colton Elrod for the 2-point conversion to make the final score 21 to 14. The Panther defense held on for the final 58 seconds to preserve the victory.
Offensively, Blanco gained over 160 yards on the night with Tim Goodman leading the way with 106 yards on 18 carries. As a team the Panthers also picked up 11 first downs.
On the defensive side of the ball, Blanco held the Badgers to 12 first downs and 282 yards, while forcing 2 interceptions by Quin Dillard and McKay Adamson. In addition, Blanco forced Karnes City into 5 punts while also turning the ball over on downs once.
At 8 and 4, Blanco will travel to Bastrop this Friday to take on East Bernard. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm.
