We always get excited when Hollywood hits the trail and takes us back in time to ol’ shoot em ups of the western days and this is one of those weeks. Appaloosa hit the shelf last week with an all-star cast and the anticipation of six shooters and Spencer rifles accompanied by brazen words from lawmen with bad guys in their sight.

Ed Harris plays Virgil Cole, who with his partner Everett Hitch (played by Viggo Mortensen), roams the West as hired guns who come in and tame towns where lawlessness reigns. Such is the case in Appaloosa, which is run by rancher Randall Bragg, who killed the town marshal (an old friend of Cole's) and his two deputies. Cole and Hitch begin the cleanup process straightaway. Then enter Allison French (played by Renee Zellweger), and we get the usual conflict of love.

Now I love a good Western and while this is no 3:10 to Yuma, it has enough of the good stuff to keep us enticed until the next great western or at least until Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino (maybe a modern day western) comes out on DVD. 3 paws
