As Pedernales Electric Cooperative looks back on the International Year of the Cooperative, PEC is proud to have maintained its commitment to its communities while continuing to provide value and outstanding member service. The Co-op closed 2012 by distributing $11.9 million in capital credits. PEC renewed its commitment to Hill Country communities throughout the year, maintaining its nationally-ranked reliability record and supporting numerous community programs. Members rewarded PEC’s efforts by helping the Co-op increase customer service rankings in national surveys throughout the year.
Encouraging and responding to member input was a Cooperative focal point for the year, with member participation playing a vital role in the Board’s decision to restructure PEC’s renewable energy goals. After receiving a record amount of member feedback, the Co-op committed to satisfying 30 percent of its electric generation capacity requirement by 2020 from renewable energy sources and committed to reducing demand growth by 20 percent annually through energy efficiency and demand side management.
These actions tie back to a broader 2012 milestone: The PEC Board’s adoption of a strategic plan that will guide Co-op activities for the next three years. The plan, adopted at the October Board meeting, lays out the Cooperative’s vision, mission and values, directing management to create clear initiatives to meet the four goals outlined in the plan.
PEC engaged members in other ways, as well. Five Board candidate forums during the election season gave members the opportunity to learn about candidates’ platforms, and a record number of members re-elected incumbent directors Cristi Clement, Dr. Patrick Cox, and Larry Landaker.
The Cooperative continued sponsorship of unique member-directed educational programs such as Beat the Peak and the 2012 Hill Country Solar Tour, both successful projects slated to grow in the future. Youth-centered programs such as scholarships and Youth Tour supported our future leaders.
PEC already is looking to 2013, when the Co-op will celebrate its 75th anniversary through the development of new products, services and tools to make working with the Cooperative more efficient and effective. These exciting new PEC offerings, which support the Co-op’s strategic plan, will bring even more power to the Cooperative’s membership.
