Summer time is here. Time to do some things around the house if you have not already. There are maintenance items and always that list of “I Want.”
For maintenance, you should have scheduled a check up for the A/C. Get it checked out, coolant added, system cleaned, etc. You might need to reverse those ceiling fans too. When reversing the ceiling fans, it does not hurt to clean the blades and replace any light bulbs. Clean those gutters. I have noticed more full gutters recently. With recent storms, you might want to call out a roofer to fix some of those loose or missing shingles.
For the “I Want” list, this can range from adding a deck, swimming pool, painting the outside, landscaping, and more. If you want a swimming pool, please make sure we are not in a severe drought. Water is too precious in the Hill Country.
Adding a deck can be a big plus. Whether adding a deck on front or back for pleasure does require some basic planning. Will it be a wooden deck? Will it have a cover? Will it be screened? Will it need steps or a ramp? Will you paint or stain it? How big do you want it? Most general contractors can help you design what you want. Just make sure you communicate what you are trying to achieve and what your budget is. Your contractor can present you with numerous options within your guidelines.
If your house is looking like it needs to be painted outside, call a general contractor or painter. They will be glad to come out and give you an estimate. Beware if the painter just wants to paint over that peeling paint, this is not a good idea. Sometimes, you have to scrape off the old paint, or even replace some of the materials.
New landscaping is always a plus. You might just be adding some more to your existing landscaping or totally redoing it all. If you live in the country, you really need to check on what type of plants will go where. If you plant something out in the open, deer love to eat it. Check with a landscaper or garden shop on what is deer-resistant. You might want to check on what grows in the sun or shade.
Summer is also a time to get the kiddos area set up. Building a playground, swing, sand box are a few fun projects for the backyard. Don’t forget the pets. They need the shade in the heat of the summer. Make sure they have a dog house, food, and water. Don’t put the pets on the hot concrete or asphalt.
Building and updating for you, kids, and pets is always important for the summer time. Just make sure you think about some of the items above. As always, enjoy and call someone that is qualified to help you out.
