Holden Wins 10th Annual Oratorical Contest

Taylor Ann Holden, Blanco High School junior, won the 10th District level of the annual American Legion High School Oratorical Contest. Her 10 minute prepared speech was on the duties and obligations of the citizens to the Constitution and she made a three minute extemporaneous speech on a particular article of the Constitution. She was sponsored by Memorial Highway Post 352. Ms. Holden will receive a $500 college scholarship and is now eligible to compete in the third Division contest, again in San Marcos, on February 3 for an additional scholarship.

The winner of the Division contest will be eligible to compete at the Department (state) level in San Angelo on February 18. Department scholarships are $2000 first place, $1500 second place, $1000 third place and $500, fourth place. Additionally, the Department winner and chaperone will have expenses paid to attend the National Quarter Finals contest in Indianapolis Indiana on April 5-6 which has an additional $1500 scholarship prize for those who are eliminated. The National Finals Contest, held the next day, has scholarships of $18000, $16000 and $14000.
