If we could travel back in time a thousand years, some say that one of the things that would immediately be impressed upon us, is simply the silence. Right now what do you hear? Television, radio, air conditioner running, a fan, cars, planes, refrigerators, and many other such things that were not present a thousand years ago, and they all contribute to the noise that we never think about. When on occasion one finds himself far enough from civilization that those things are removed - the complete silence is deafening. Most of the time today we are so tuned in that we are tuned out to what is real.
The prophet Habakkuk said, "The Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him" (Habakkuk 2:20). Perhaps we surround ourselves with noise because when there is complete silence we don't really like what we hear. Silence gives us the opportunity to be honest, to think about ourselves, about our God, and sometimes those thoughts cause us to deal with things that noise has been covering up. The Father in heaven has something to say to you. Note that 'silent' and 'listen' are spelled with the same letters. Are you listening?
