This past week, the Blanco FFA Chapter hosted and competed in the Hill District FFA Invitational Fall Career Development Events. Overall, almost 300 students from more than 25 schools competed in this year’s event, which marked the 22nd year that Blanco has hosted this invitational competition.
In the land evaluation competition, Blanco would place 4th overall with Phi Alvarado placing 4th as well in the individual rankings. Other team members included Carlin Green, Devlin Moore, Nicole Spivey, Brandon Bankston, Colby Batey, Kenny Omo, James McFarlin, John Hodge, Jubal Elrod, Terry Yarbrough, Alex Palos, Joe Perkins, Dylan Brattlof and Bryan Brecka.
Blanco’s homesite team would also do very well placing 1st. Savannah Kershaw and Jamie McClinton would take the top two spots individually placing 1st and 2nd respectively while Robbie Arlitt would rank in the top 10 placing 9th. Other local students judging homesite included Taylor Guinn, Deanna Sevilla, Megan Wier, Meaghan Seales, Lainie Parker, Sarah Brotzman, Austin Andrews and Ryan Edwards.
In the Plant ID event, Blanco would do extremely well claiming the top 6 individual spots en route to a 1st place team finish. Ian Kirkland would win high point honors followed by Emily Romero, Ryan Bible, Sara Jean Martinez, Taylor Calder and Diego Alegria. Taylor Spriggs would round out the overall top 10 placing 10th. Others competing in Plant ID were Maryn McMain, Jon Caldwell, Amanda Guthrie, Cheyenne Klein, Bret Leigh Nance, James Rodriguez, Connor Anderson, Caitlin Taylor, Kelly Eskew, Alexis Liesmann and Victoria Jeske.
Finally, Blanco would place 1st overall in the range contest with senior Alley Penshorn taking home 1st high individual honors. Following close behind placing 2nd would be Rance Dollahite. Also placing in the top 10 were Logan Dodd 5th, Dylan Bates 7th, Katherine Biggs 8th and Kari Graham 9th. Other Blanco FFA members judging range included Mason LeBlanc, Kyle Gray, Payton Savarino, Kristen Bowman, Kyle Sauceda, Abbie Culton and Jason Wheeler.
Blanco’s Land, Homesite, Plant ID and Range Teams will now turn their attention to the Area VII Fall CDE’s to be held this Wednesday in Bandera. More than 130 schools 1A to 5A will have the opportunity to compete with hopes of advancing to the state contests in April. Advisors for the Blanco FFA are Felice and Jason Marek.
