The Blanco High School boys basketball team won the Johnson City Tournament on Saturday, December 7 with a 69-39 victory over the Johnson City Eagles in the championship game. In route to the championship final , the Panthers soundly defeated the Center Point Pirates, 53-24, and the Smithson Valley JV, 62-47.
Against Center Point, Kyle Sauceda scored 11 with Carlin Green sinking 9. Jacob McCaslin and Alfredo Amezquita each added 8. In the semi-final game against the SVJV, Sauceda pumped in 20 points with David Ramirez scoring 13. Green and McCaslin each made 9 points. Against Johnson City, Green led Blanco with 16 points while Sauceda scored 13. Ramirez added 9 points. Green also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Panthers. Ramirez and Sauceda were recognized with All-Tournament honors.
The Panthers traveled to Devine for the Warhorse basketball tournament held December 12 through 14. Blanco placed 3rd posting 2 wins and 2 losses. The Panthers defeated Jourdanton 69-35, Sauceda paced the team scoring 19 points with Green hitting 14. Brett Champion added 10. Blanco then outscored Pleasanton 88-79. Sauceda, McCaslin, and Champion ripped the nets scoring 24, 23, and 21 points respectively.
The Panthers suffered their first loss of the season to Bandera, 29-62. McCaslin and Champion each scored 8, with Sauceda adding 5. Trent Dechert made 3 points. Blanco then fell to Devine 61-82. Sauceda scorched the hoops scoring 29 points. Champion added 14 with Green and McCaslin sinking 7 each. Champion and Sauceda were named All-Tournament.
The junior varsity also played in the Devine Tournament. The JV competition was tough with the Panthers going 0 of 4. The Panthers fell to Jourdanton 39-43. Dylan Tesch paced the team scoring 12 points with John Cross Caldwell adding 9. Ross Edwards scored 7. Blanco then lost to Pleasanton 47-63. Dawson Albin scored 11 to lead the Panthers. Tesch scored 10 while Edwards added 7. In the 43-63 loss to Bandera, Diego Alegria scored 14 with Tesch adding 11. Albin scored 7. Against Devine the Panthers fell 41-61. Alegria led the team scoring 18 points. Albin added 8, with Noah Wheeler scoring 4.
The Panthers will host a varsity tournament after the Christmas break on January 2-4.
