Building a home is a huge responsibility. Not everyone who builds a house is cut out for it, so when you are thinking about buying a house from someone who built it themselves, or even from a builder, watch out and take this advice.

Most people who build their own homes are very particular people. They want things done the right way and usually done by themselves. This is good because they usually pay particular attention to details, but it can be bad because most people aren’t skilled in every area and can’t do everything themselves or at least not do it well themselves. When you are thinking about buying a house pay attention to details, best yet – Contract a registered builder.

If you can, find out what the builder did themselves. If it is really good workmanship, then it is probably a great house. Someone who spent hours building their own house and paid attention to every detail and hired out work where they didn’t know how to do certain things, built a great house. They will have made sure that the house they were building is great and the best workmanship it could possibly be.

Some builders who usually build houses by the hundreds, aren’t always concerned about the quality. They do things as fast as they can will concern only that they are on schedule and will pass the home inspection. Some builders are great and do pay attention to detail, so if you are buying a house from a professional builder, find out what their reputation is and if they are a good builder.

If you can, talk to the neighbors about the person who built the house. They might know if the builder had to replace anything, or fix something that they did wrong, or if they left anything unfixed that they aren’t telling you. Neighbors are great to talk to about a neighborhood as well and can let you know if the builder had plumbers come for the plumbing or and electrician for the electricity.

Just because a person built the home they are selling doesn’t mean that the house is bad. The home is usually in great shape and can be a great opportunity for you. But you have to be careful. People nowadays can be very cheap and will do anything to make a quick buck. They will be willing to skimp on something that you wouldn’t want to be skimped on, so just make sure that you do your homework. Get a realtor/builder to help you and ask around before you buy anything. It will only help you.
