Pliny the Elder, a Roman writer told a story of the setting of a 99-foot-tall obelisk. Over 20,000 workers were chosen to pull on the ropes to hoist the apparatus. This was a tremendous responsibility. Just one mishap could cause the obelisk to fall and destroy years of work. So to insure the engineer's best effort he ordered the engineer’s own son to be strapped to the apex of the obelisk so that his heart, as well as his head, would be fully given to the task at hand.

Jesus tells us that earthly things are temporary and that worldly treasures can easily be taken from us. He emphasis making heavenly investments a priority. He says, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matthew 6:19-21). No doubt if the engineer's heart was not in the work before, it was when his son's life was at stake. The obelisk was not his treasure, but his son was. We may say that our interest is in heavenly things, but when we look at our lives and see the investment we make in time, energy, money, and priorities, we may have to come to another conclusion. The Father's intention is to win your heart, He truly seeks your undivided attention. Come and learn of Him!
