Wednesday, July 16, 2014 • Posted July 18, 2014

This year the Chapel In The Cove in Spring Branch, Texas is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Pastor Doug Groen’s ministry. He is believed to have the longest tenure of any Pastor in the Canyon Lake area. Pastor Groen is a retired U.S. Army Chaplain. Following college and seminary training in the Midwest, Pastor Groen volunteered to become a U.S. Army Chaplain during the Vietnam era, serving overseas in combat with an infantry division. Other tours followed in Korea with another infantry division and joint command. He culminated his military career in a major command position, managing all Army Chaplain medical assets in the U.S. and overseas. The wisdom he gleaned from these tours he transferred to his peers. He became one of the founding fathers for a residency training program for Army Chaplains; he has trained active duty chaplains and civilian clergy. During these years he established and accredited four training centers within the Army, the last being at South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio. His specialty areas of study include theology, adult education, religious education, clinical pastoral education, and marriage and family therapy. In 1994 he was selected to become the Pastor at the Chapel In The Cove located in Spring Branch, Texas ( A sense of faithfulness begins with the choices and commitments we make in life. He exemplifies for our spiritual community the calling and leadership by being with us and among us for twenty years. He knows his people as one who has shepherded people in diverse settings often providing spiritual care to those in crisis experiencing trauma, grief and loss. Pastor Groen has led the Interdenominational church with passion and commitment. His ability to include people from numerous denominations to follow their belief in God and find unity is a testament to his unending guidance in faith. Pastor Groen and Jan, his wife, are the parents of two daughters and four grandsons living in Texas and Ohio. Jan serves as the pipe organist for the military community in San Antonio, Texas.

The Chapel In The Cove was chartered in the 1970s. Started by a few early settlers of the Cypress Cove subdivision, the church grew as it moved from its initial meeting place in the local park to the community’s Civic Center. In 1982 about 20 people began building the church on property donated by the subdivision developer and the chapel was completed in 1983. The Chapel has 15 beautiful stained glass windows dedicated to members and friends.

As an interdenominational, community church, Christians from all denominations come together under the banner of one Lord, one Spirit, and one baptism. The richness of their beliefs, the hospitality of their outreach, and the power of the Holy Spirit working in, through and before them, give the fellowship a unity that witnesses to the nature of the Church.

Please feel free to join the Chapel In The Cove on Sunday mornings. Service starts at 10:00AM. Our address is 3674 Tanglewood Trail in Spring Branch. You can visit our website at
