Read Romans 8:28-39. Verse 39 says, “Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Thus far we have covered: 1.God’s love is the greatest thing in the world. It is towards us and in us (Rom 5:5). 2. Brotherly love is the great commandment, and is proof that God’s love dwells in us, and that we have eternal life. Today we will look at the fact that nothing can separate us from God’s love, and this is based solely on the work of Jesus Christ.
J. Vernon McGee says this concerning Romans 8: “We entered this chapter with no condemnation; we conclude it with no separation; and in between all things work together for good. Can you improve on this, friend? This is wonderful!” We know from Romans 8:28-39 that believers are called “The called.” We are called, because God predestined us to be conformed into the image of Christ from the foundation of the world. Who God calls, He justifies; and who He justifies (declares righteous), He glorifies. Without exception, He works all things together for our good. If God is for us, who can be against us? Who can condemn? Who can accuse? Jesus justifies us, and is our intercessor and advocate. Because of this, we have absolute assurance that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because God loves us so much, He gave Jesus to be our sacrifice for sins, and redeem us through His blood. John 16:27 - “For the Father himself loves you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.” If we love Jesus, and believe that He is God from God, we have assurance that The Father loves us.
God has chosen us in Jesus from the foundation of the world. In Christ, He has made us holy and without blame in His presence in love (Eph 1:4). This is Agape love. It is proactive. God initiated it all. Because God is so rich in mercy, and for His great and abundant love He has for us, He has made us alive together with Christ, and raised us up to sit in Heavenly places with Him. Why? Because, through Christ, He wants to show us His exceeding grace and kindness for all eternity! (Eph 2:4-7). This is so wonderful and glorious, that it is beyond comprehension!
Again, God’s kindness and love for us have nothing to do with works of righteousness that we have done. He saved us abundantly by His mercy through Jesus, and made us heirs to the Kingdom of God (Titus 3:4-7). God didn’t wait for us to be righteous. He did wait for us to love Him, so that He could react in love. No, He was proactive, and loved us while we were unlovely and unlovable. He saved us and made us righteous through faith in Jesus, while we were yet sinners. God did all of this without our consent! It is who He is! We can either believe it and receive it, or doubt it and do without it.
1Jn 4:9-10 says, “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” What manifested (made known) God’s great love for us? Sending Jesus to die for us. Don’t ask God, “Do You love me?” Just look at Jesus’ outstretched arms on the cross, and never doubt it again. He loved you enough to sacrifice His only begotten Son for you, so that He could show you His kindness for all eternity! What more can He do, to make you believe He loves you?
1Jn 4:16 says, “And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him.” Do you know - and believe - how much God truly loves you? Is this reality to you? Can you see that God loves you abundantly and unconditionally, based on what Jesus did, and your acceptance of it? It’s all because of Jesus! God can - and does - love you freely, completely, and unconditionally, based totally on the finished work of Jesus Christ. Christian, nothing can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. Nothing! Selah.
