Home maintenance is very important. Just like a car or our body, we need to have a check up, some routine maintenance performed, and general up clean check list. A home falls into this category too. Maintenance will help things run better, look better, and last longer. So what do you need to do for your home? You might want to make a list to follow. You might want to have a monthly list, seasonal, and yearly.
On the monthly list here are some things I would suggest. Change those Air Conditioner filters. Pick a day like the first and always change them. If you don’t have pets, large family, and other things to stir up a lot of dust, you might be able to get away with changing them every other month. If you have hood vents with filters, change them too. If you have a cat litter box with a filter, add it to your list too. You might want to test your smoke detectors when changing those filters. The batteries might need to be changed. If you have a water softener, time to add the salt if needed. If in the hard water areas, it’s always a good thing to check your hot water heater for any water leakage. Hot water heaters just don’t last as long with hard water. Propane tanks need to be checked and add propane as needed. If you have a pest problem, you might need to have someone come out, this can vary from monthly, quarterly, etc. depending on your needs.
As for seasonal, I would classify this as Spring and Fall. We need to schedule those A/C companies out to look at the unit and test for the on coming change of weather. Plus, they normally clean it and give it a general check up. Check out and clean the gutters in Spring, since they might have collected leaves from the fall and winter.
For Fall, you might want to make sure all your screens are fine. Most of us like to open the windows during the cool days and nights. When checking the screens, check the seals around your windows and doors. You might need to patch it up, prior to the winter coming. Fire Extinguishers can be tested at these times too. You might be able to test them yourself or have a company look at them. If you use Propane heaters, you might want to call your local propane company to come check them out prior to using them for the winter. Did you know Propane water heaters should be vented through the roof, not just in the attic due to carbon monoxide? As for the yard, spring is a time to get it all cleaned up. Fall is a time to start getting those plants in the greenhouse or prepare covers for them. Also, don’t forget to clean out that fireplace in the fall. You might need to get the chimney cleaned occasionally too.
Yearly items could include power washing your exterior house and porch, or having to get it repainted or resealed. You might want to prepare a list for projects. Like build a new patio in the Spring or Fire pit in the fall. Clean out the garage or shed on a yearly basis. Amazing how you can accumulate items. I’m sure you have other items you want to put on this list.
Lists can be good and help us all stay on track. Everyone’s list will vary, but some things are the same. Your home is a big expense, so take care of it.
