Wednesday, February 18, 2009 • Posted February 17, 2009

Super Squad of the Hill Country has brought the house down during recent performances in Blanco and Boerne.

Performing during Varsity basketball halftimes, the cheer squad has displayed their terrific dancing abilities as well as wowing the crowds with their stunts.

Super Squad is an after school program that focuses on teaching leadership, team building, self-confidence, self-esteem and encouraging physical fitness without the pressure to compete. The dream of owner Kelly Owens, it is based in Boerne, and there are five squads that comprise the group, the newest being the Blanco squad, led by Head Coach Michelle Edge. Her assistant coaches are Perla Fordyce, Amanda Smith and Shannon Srackangast.

On Friday, February 6, the five squads came together to perform at the Champion Charger Varsity Boys game in Boerne.

As the large group of girls filed into the gym at half time, the people in the stands watched with amusement to see these cute little cheerleaders line up.

The amusement turned to awe as the music pumped through the gym and Super Squad began there impressive dance.

Cheers went up and the crowd was yelling as they witnessed the talent of these young performers.

The squads performed a long dance routine and two cheers that made the fans erupt in applause and cheers.

When the stunt groups sent up three flyers and executed pyramids rivaling more experienced cheer leaders, the applause was almost deafening.

As the cheerleaders concluded their performance and began to leave the floor, a group of high school boys started a chant that rippled through the crowd. “Super Squad, Super Squad!”

The squad meets twice a week to learn new cheers and choreography in preparation of performances in Blanco and the surrounding area.

Since they started in August, they have performed several times; at the Blanco Christmas Parade, Live Oak Medical Center, the Blanco Homecoming Pep Rally, and at a Blanco Varsity Girls Basketball game.

On March 22, Super Squad will perform during the Before Game show for the San Antonio Spurs.
